Following Lissandro’s victory at JESC 2022 in Yerevan with the song “Oh Maman!” – France’s second win in three years – France Télévisions will organize the Contest at Palais Nikaïa in Nice.

The 21st edition of the Contest for talented 9 to 14-year-olds will be held on Sunday 26 November. The slogan and branding for the event will be revealed later this year.

The 2022 Junior Eurovision Song Contest reached 33 million viewers and was hosted in Yerevan by AMPTV. 4.6 million people saw content on the Contest’s official YouTube channel during the event with 2.5 million engagement actions across its digital platforms.

Martin Österdahl, Executive Supervisor, for JESC, said: “We are delighted to return to France for the 21st Junior Eurovision Song Contest just 2 years after a spectacular hosting in Paris. The team at France Télévisions have the experience, vision, and passion to create something truly magical in Nice this November and we look forward to working with them in the coming months on another exciting show.”

Delphine Ernotte-Cunci, President of France Télévisions and President of the EBU added: “France Télévisions is proud to welcome young artists from all over Europe and beyond to celebrate the unifying power of music. I am very happy that this second edition of Junior Eurovision organized by France will be held in Nice, a city of history and culture emblematic of our country. Once again, this year, the Junior Eurovision Song Contest will delight young and old alike, who will follow this festive and popular event at the Palais Nikaïa and on the EBU’s public media channels.”

Alexandra Redde-Amiel, Head of Variety and Entertainment at France Télévisions, said: “This is an historic occasion! France has won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest twice in 3 years thanks to Valentina and Lissandro whom we congratulate again! This is a source of immense pride for France Télévisions and all the French Delegation. “In 2023, the adventure starts again. What an honour to have the chance to organize and produce the show one of the greatest European musical shows once again in France alongside the EBU, all the delegations and all the young artists! The Junior Eurovision Song Contest shows how much cultural and musical power our new generations have in the world. Finally, we are extremely lucky to be welcomed by the City of Nice, the famous and iconic “French Riviera”, with its international aura. We’re incredibly grateful to Mayor Christian Estrosi and his team. The Palais Nikaia is a fantastic venue where we can create a unique and exceptional show. We are looking forward to creating, innovating and putting forward our “French touch” to make the 2023 Junior Eurovision Song Contest shine on the European stage on 26 November.”

Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, President of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region added: “It is an honour for the City of Nice to host a renowned European competition such as Junior Eurovision, which brings together some 20 participating countries and more than 33 million television viewers. Nice is a unique landscape, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which will be an exceptional setting to showcase the Junior Eurovision candidates. But it’s much more than that. Trusting the City of Nice to host and organize this unique evening in our Palais Nikaïa is proof that we are a European city that organizes world events, especially cultural ones.” Junior Eurovision will enable the City of Nice to shine once again throughout Europe thanks to extensive media coverage with 200 journalists present and high visibility on social networks. Significant economic spin-offs are expected, with more than 5,000 overnight stays generated just for the event.”

Estonia will be making their debut in the competition this year, while Germany are returning after one year away making this the first Junior Eurovision where all of the so-called ‘Big 5’ (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) are competing together.

France is hosting ing the 21st edition of the competition, featuring new songs from young artists aged between 9 and 14-years-old, thanks to Lissandro’s victory with the rock-n-roll inspired Oh Maman! in Yerevan last year. Lissandro gave his country its second win in 3 years.

WE ARE THE HEROES OF OUR TIME. France Télévisions have chosen ‘Heroes’ as the theme for the event. More than a slogan, it was decided to use a word that inspires and gives children incredible strength and will feature throughout the event.

The accompanying artwork captures the energy of the word ‘Heroes’, with powerful, joyful colours and a ‘street art’ look that brings modernity and speaks to all generations.

The splashes, which will also feature each participating country’s flag, are made of a combination of paint, chalk, powder, and fireworks.

Through the artwork and slogan France Télévisions want to create a unique experience for the 21st Junior Eurovision Song Contest and convey an explosion of happiness in a world where children are the Heroes.

Martin Österdahl, Executive Supervisor for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest said: ‘We’re delighted to be welcoming talented young artists from 16 countries this year to Nice for the 21st Junior Eurovision Song Contest. It’s exciting to be returning to France so soon, to a new host city as well as welcoming a new country (Estonia) to the competition. Our colleagues at France TV have once again put together a great creative team to give us all a spectacular show and make the young artists feel like the Heroes they are.’

“UNIQUE AND SPECTACULAR”. Alexandra Redde-Amiel, Head of Variety, Games and Entertainment at France Télévisions, added:  ‘We are so proud to be organizing the Junior Eurovision in France for the 2nd time, in Nice at the Palais Nikaïa. ‘Thanks again to Lissandro for making this 2nd victory possible! France Télévisions, and the entire French delegation, are looking forward to honouring the Contest more than ever, alongside the EBU and all the participating countries! We can’t wait to create a unique and spectacular show with outstanding contestants – true musical heroes as we continue to spread music throughout Europe and the rest of the world, sharing our cultures and passions. We look forward to welcoming you all on November 26. The show must go on!’

This year’s Junior Eurovision Song Contest will take place at the Palais Nikaïa in Nice on Sunday 26 November at 16:00 CET.

Palais Nikaia, host venue of the 2023 contest.

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 is the upcoming 21st edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster France Télévisions. The contest is set to take place on 26 November 2023 at the Palais Nikaïa in Nice, France, following the country’s victory at the 2022 contest with the song “Oh maman!” by Lissandro.[3][4] This will be the second time that France will host the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, the first being in Paris in 2021.

Sixteen countries will participate in the contest, with Estonia participating for the first time and Germany returning after its absence from the previous edition, while Kazakhstan and Serbia will not take part. This will also be the first time that all members of the “Big Five” from the Eurovision Song Contest take part in the junior contest together.

1.Location. The contest will take place at the Palais Nikaïa in Nice, a multi-purpose concert hall.

1.1.Bidding phase and host city selection. Unlike in the Eurovision Song Contest, the winning country did not receive the automatic rights to host the next contest. However, since 2019, each contest has been hosted by the previous year’s winning country, and since 2011 (with the exceptions of 2012 and 2018), the winning country has had the right of first refusal on hosting the following competition. In 2015, Italy was given the option to host but ultimately opted out of it.

Following France’s win in 2022, French head of delegation Alexandra Redde-Amiel and Director General of France Télévisions Delphine Ernotte revealed that the country wishes to host the contest in 2023. On 3 April 2023, the EBU and France Télévisions announced that the contest would be held in Nice.

Format.

Rules. At the Edinburgh TV Festival in August 2023, Jean-Philip de Tender, Deputy Director General of the EBU, discussed the possibility of explicitly banning AI-generated content from the contest in order to preserve human contribution, maintaining that “creativity should come from humans and not from machines”.

Visual design. The 2023 contest is the first edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest to incorporate the Eurovision heart, which has been used in the adult contest since 2004, in its generic logo. The update was revealed during the host city announcement on 3 April 2023.

During a European Broadcasting Union press conference on 10 May 2023 in Liverpool, where the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 was taking place, Alexandra Redde-Amiel, head of the French Eurovision delegation, announced the slogan of the contest, “Heroes”. The accompanying theme art was unveiled on 29 August, which features a street art look based on splashes of paint, chalk, powder and fireworks that “brings modernity and speaks to all generations”.

Participating countries. On 29 August 2023, the EBU announced that 16 countries will participate in the contest, with Estonia making its debut and Germany returning after a one-year absence, while Kazakhstan and Serbia will not take part:

Anastasia Vasadze, Nikoloz Kharati and Oto Bazerashvili – ? – Georgia 🇬🇪

Anastasia Vasadze has won Georgia’s young talent contest ‘Ranina 2023’, and will represent her country in Nice at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest with a song yet to be decided. And that’s not all! Anastasia will be accompanied by Nikoloz and Oto on the Junior Eurovision stage; both fellow finalists in Ranina. They’ll be hoping to build on the success of Mariam Bigvava who finished 3rd last year with her song I Believe. In 2018, at the age of 6, Anastasia won the children’s international competition Wonderland, before adding the Golden Muse 2021 title to her accomplishments which resulted in her being invited to the Malta International Festival, where a Georgian culture day was held. The singer studies at St. George’s International School, attending ballet classes, and balancing her school work with socialising. Anastasia enjoys playing football (her team is Real Madrid) and listening to Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga and Beyonce. She lives in Tbilisi with her Golden Retriever.

Georgia will compete in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in France, which will be held in Nice on 26 November 2023. The children’s talent show Ranina was used for the sixth year in a row to select Georgia’s representative, Anastasia Vasadze. Later, it was revealed that she would be joined by Nikoloz Kharati and Oto Bazerashvlili.

Background. Prior to the 2023 contest, Georgia had participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest fifteen times since its debut in 2007, and since then they have never missed a single contest. Georgia is also the most successful country in the competition, with three victories in 2008, 2011 and 2016. In the 2022 contest, Mariam Bigvava represented Georgia with the song “I Believe” following her victory in the fifth season of Ranina, achieving 3rd place out of 16 with 161 points.

Before Junior Eurovision. For the sixth year in a row, Georgia used an original children’s talent show format, Ranina (Georgian: რანინა), as the selection method for their artist. Georgian broadcaster GPB confirmed that Ranina would be used for the sixth time in December 2022. The list of participants competing in the show was revealed on 1 February 2023, confirming that the show would once again have 10 competitors. On March 29, GPB announced that Ranina’s first episode will be aired on April 1.

Classical pianist David Aladashvili remained as the main host of the show. Last years finalist Vache Ghviniashvili joined him as co-host.

FIA – Ohne Worte – 🇩🇪 Germany

Germany are sending FIA to Nice. FIA was born in Shanghai, and after the birth of her sister, the family moved back to Germany. They now live in Berlin with their two rabbits Simba and Puschel. If you ask FIA what her favourite hobby is, the first thing she says is ‘performing’; she sings and dances anytime and anywhere and is the entertainer in her family. During her appearance on this year’s season of The Voice Kids, FIA impressed audiences with her translation of the songs using sign language. She was inspired to do this by her little sister.

Germany is set to compete in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in France, which will be held on 26 November 2023 in Nice. National television station KiKa is responsible for the participation and selected the nation’s entrant via national selection, won by Fia with the song “Ohne Worte”.

Background. Germany announced on 8 July 2020 that it would debut in the 2020 contest held in Warsaw, Poland. Children’s station KiKa, a joint venture of the German national broadcasters ARD and ZDF, broadcasts the event within Germany and organises the selection of the nation’s entry. Their most recent entry before the 2023 contest was Pauline and her song “Imagine Us”, who placed 17th with 61 points in the 2021 contest.

In 2022, the country chose not to participate and instead took a “creative break” due to partial travel warnings for host country Armenia issued by the Federal Foreign Office. KiKa still broadcast the show and expressed interest in returning to the 2023 competition.

Before Junior Eurovision.

National final. The German television announced on 25 May 2023 that they would select the German representative internally for the first time. However, in early August it was reported that more details regarding the country’s participation would be revealed at the end of the month, and on 23 August it was revealed that a national final with 5 acts approached by the public broadcaster NDR would be held in September to select the German act for the contest instead.

The participants and one-minute excerpts of the demo versions of their songs were revealed on 8 September with a voting platform launching immediately afterwards, where viewers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland can cast their votes until 17 September. Following the combination of the results of the online voting (50%) and an international expert jury (50%), German child singer of Chinese descent Fia was announced as the winner of the selection on 18 September. The international jury consisted of Kelvin Jones, Tom Gregory and Christopher, as well as other unnamed members from France, Germany, Poland, Portugal and the United Kingdom.

Poland is set to compete in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Nice, France. Polish broadcaster Telewizja Polska (TVP) is responsible for the country’s participation in the contest and again chose the Polish artist through the national selection Szansa na sukces, won by Maja Krzyżewska and her rendition of the internally selected song “I Just Need a Friend”.

Background. Prior to the 2023 contest, Poland had participated in the contest nine times: In 2003 and 2004, Poland finished in last place, and they decided not to participate from 2005 to 2015. The country returned in 2016. Olivia Wieczorek was selected to represent the nation that year with the song “Nie zapomnij“. Olivia finished in 11th place out of 17 entries with 60 points. In both 2018 and 2019, Poland won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest with Roksana Węgiel and Viki Gabor respectively, becoming the first country to win the contest twice in a row. In 2022, Laura competed for Poland with the song “To the Moon” which ended up in 10th place out of 16 entries with 95 points.

Before Junior Eurovision.

Szansa na sukces. TVP selected the Polish representative with the television program Szansa na sukces (transl. Chance of Success); the same show was also used for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest since 2019, and various times for the Eurovision Song Contest. The competition consisted of four shows which concluded with a winning artist and competing song reveal on 24 September 2023. The shows were broadcast on TVP2, as well as online via the platform TVP VOD and at the broadcaster’s website tvp.pl, hosted by Aleksander Sikora [pl], who hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019.

Format. The casting for the show took place on 13 and 14 May, from which twenty-one acts were selected to advance to the competition. The format of the national final consisted of four shows: three pre-recorded heats with seven contestants each broadcast on 3, 10 and 17 September 2023, respectively, and a final broadcast live on 24 September 2023. In each heat, the contestants performed cover versions of randomly drawn songs and a three-member professional jury consisting of Marek Sierocki (Polish commentator of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest) and 2 unique members for each episode selected the winner of the episode which qualifies to the final and a runner-up which receives a honourable mention, but does not advance to the final. TVP reserved the right to select up to two wildcard contestants to advance to the final as well, with those contestants being given the Golden Ticket in the broadcast of the heat they competed in. The final featured the remaining contestants again performing cover versions of randomly drawn songs that were already performed during the heats, after which the 50/50 combination of votes from a three-member professional jury and a public vote decided the 2 superfinalists. The superfinalists then performed their renditions of the internally selected Polish entry, after which the winner was selected solely by public vote.

Shows.

Heat 1. The first heat was broadcast on 3 September 2023 at 15:15 CET. Joining permanent juror Marek Sierocki on the jury panel were:

  • Sara James – singer, runner-up of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021
  • Tulia – folk music band, represented Poland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019
