The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 is set to be the 20th edition of the annual Junior Eurovision Song Contest. It is set to take place in Yerevan, Armenia on 11 December 2022, following the country’s victory at the 2021 contest with the song “Qami Qami” by Maléna. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU-UER) and host broadcaster Public Television Company of Armenia (AMPTV), the contest will be held at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex (Կարեն Դեմիրճյանի անվան մարզահամերգային համալիր). This will be the second time that Armenia hosts the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, the first being in 2011.

Sixteen countries will participate in the contest. The United Kingdom will return after a sixteen-year absence, while Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Germany and Russia will not take part, with the latter’s broadcasters having been indefinitely suspended from the EBU-UER due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex, host venue of the 2022 contest.

1.Location. The contest is set to take place at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex in Yerevan, the capital and largest city of Armenia. The venue previously hosted the 2011 contest. It will also be the third consecutive time the contest is held in a capital city.

1.1.Bidding phase and host city selection. Armenia’s hosting had been confirmed by the EBU-UER on 21 December 2021, following their win at the 2021 contest two days before. Originally, unlike in the Eurovision Song Contest, the winning country did not receive the automatic rights to host the next contest. However, since 2019, each contest has been hosted by the previous year’s winning country. The venue was revealed on 17 February 2022 during a cabinet meeting of the Armenian government, where Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made the announcement. Pashinyan also mentioned that the government had allocated funds to the venue to prepare for the event. It was already reported earlier in that week that Yerevan would be the host city.

2.Format.

2.0. Presenters. Iveta Mukuchyan, Garik Papoyan and Karina Ignatyan will be the presenters of the show. Ignatyan was also the Armenian entrant in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019. The hosts were revealed on 18 November.

2.1.Visual design. The theme art and slogan for the contest, “Spin the Magic” (Պտտի՛ր հրաշքը), was revealed on 26 September 2022. The artwork features an Armenian-styled spinning top as the main motif.

AMPTV clarified that the theme art reveal was delayed due to the border situation between Armenia and Azerbaijan. In a press release, AMPTV stated that “preparations for the contest are ongoing, and according to the schedule, it was no longer possible to change the deadlines”, while expressing hope that the contest will be held in peaceful conditions.

3.Participating countries. On 26 September 2022, the EBU-UER announced that 16 countries would participate in the contest. After a 16-year hiatus, the United Kingdom will return to the contest, with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) replacing ITV, who previously organised the country’s participation in the contest between 2003 and 2005. Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Germany and Russia will not return after having participated in 2021, with the latter’s broadcasters having been indefinitely suspended from the EBU-UER.

3.Other countries. For a country to be eligible for potential participation in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, it needs to be an active member of the EBU.

3.1.Active EBU members.

  • 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan – In January 2022, Eldar Rasulov, a member of Azerbaijani delegation, stated that the country must participate regardless where the contest is held in response to rumours that they would withdraw due to the upcoming contest being held in Armenia. However, by September 2022, the country’s broadcaster had yet to confirm their participation in the 2022 contest. The country ultimately did not appear on the final list of participants.
  • 🇪🇪 Estonia – In May 2022, Estonian broadcaster ERR announced that Estonia would not debut in the 2022 contest due to financial limitations, but did not close the door to future participation.
  • 🇫🇮 Finland – In May 2022, Finnish broadcaster Yle announced that Finland would not debut at the 2022 contest because they “do not want to create new child stars or feel comfortable with children competing in these types of shows”.
  • 🇩🇪 Germany – In August 2022, German broadcaster NDR confirmed that they will not be participating in 2022 due to a “creative break” and partial travel warnings for Armenia issued by the Federal Foreign Office. They will, however, still broadcast the contest, with a view of returning in 2023.
  • 🇮🇱 Israel – In June 2022, Israeli broadcaster KAN confirmed that they would not be participating in 2022 due to focusing their efforts on the Eurovision Song Contest. Israel last participated in 2018.
  • 🇲🇪 Montenegro – In May 2022, Montenegrin broadcaster RTCG announced that Montenegro would not return to the contest in 2022, due to lack of funds and focus on the adult version of the contest. Montenegro last participated in 2015.
  • 🇸🇮 Slovenia – Despite initially stating that they were considering a return, in May 2022, RTVSLO, the Slovenian broadcaster, confirmed that they will not be returning to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest this year because the show is not provided in their ‘Program-Production Plan’ for 2022. Slovenia last participated in 2015.

3.3.Non-EBU members.

  •  Belarus – Belarusian broadcaster BTRC was expelled from the EBU on 1 July 2021, therefore losing the rights to broadcast and participate in the contest unless another Belarusian broadcaster joins the EBU. In August 2021, it was confirmed that the suspension would last for three years, thus Belarus will not be able to compete until 2024 unless the EBU decides to reduce their punishment.
  • 🇷🇺 Russia – Despite having initially confirmed their participation on 13 February 2022, all EBU members from Russia announced their withdrawal from the union on 26 February, in response to their exclusion from the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On 1 March, a further statement from the EBU announced that it had suspended its Russian members from its governance structures. On 26 May, the EBU made effective the suspension of its Russian members, causing Russia to indefinitely lose broadcasting and participation rights for future Eurovision events, including Junior Eurovision. The Russian selection process for the 2022 contest was therefore cancelled, with an alternative competition similar in format to Junior Eurovision, called Nashe pokoleniye (English: Our Generation), to be held in the autumn in Moscow.

• Carlos Higes – SEÑORITA – Spain 🇪🇸

Luna Sabella is a 12 year old living in the south of the Netherlands with her parents and older brother. At the age of 7 she began to audition for musicals, and participated in regional and national song contests. Last year Luna took part in The Voice Kids, which was great practice for the Junior Songfestival, which she won, achieving a maximum score from all the juries! In her spare time, the young singer likes to listen to music, draw on her iPad, and hang out with friends.

• Freya Skye – Lose My Head – United Kingdom 🇬🇧

Freya Skye developed a love of singing after receiving a karaoke machine as a present when she was 5. During lockdown, the singer-songwriter took the opportunity to release her debut single and write more songs, including I Love The Way, which featured on BBC Introducing. In her spare time, Freya enjoys cuddling up with her dog Ruby and watching movies, teaching herself the piano, and following her favourite football team, Tottenham Hotspur. Cheese and ham toasted sandwiches rank highly amongst the things that make Freya happy.

• Nare – DANCE! – Armenia 🇦🇲

Nare will represent Armenia, the host country, when Junior Eurovision comes to town on Sunday 11 December. The young artist loves to sing and dance, and says she’s surprised that her dream of performing on a big stage is already becoming a reality. On top of that, Nare’s also excited about the prospect of introducing her new friends from across Europe to her hometown of Yerevan. The 14 year old will follow in the footsteps of Armenia’s 2021 champion Maléna when she takes to the stage in the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex.

Chanel Dilecta lives in the small town of Thiene, Italy, with her family and a toothless dog named Rambo. She’s studied singing and ballet since the age of 4, along with the piano, modern dance and stage art; all of which has come in handy when competing in international competitions such as TMF (Tour Music Fest) 2021, the Italian Performer Cup (2021) and The Coach Contest. In her free time, Chanel designs jewellery, has a passion for reading books, knitting, and enjoys solving Rubik’s Cubes. Chanel’s favourite things are: good music, books, Eurovision, Harry Styles, and baby animals. Who could argue with that?

• Kejtlin Gjata – Pakëz Diell – Albania 🇦🇱

Keijtlin Gjata comes from the coastal city of Durrës, Albania, where she lives with her playful pet cat Kiki. She spends a lot of time by the sea, and finds inspiration in being close to nature. The 11 year old enjoys the music of Adele, Paloma Faith, and Josh Groban, and her most favourite sportsperson is the inspirational surfer Bethany Hamilton. It’s the young singer’s dream to travel the world and meet as many people as possible – and taking part in Junior Eurovision will help her to do just that!

• Lara feat. Jovan & Irina – Životot E Pred Mene – North Macedonia 🇲🇰

Lara feat. Jovan & Irina. Lara has loved the arts since a very early age, showing a keen interest in music, ballet, literature, and theatre. She’s an accomplished violinist and has taken part in many competitions and shows, which is how she got to know her friend Irina. Irina loves playing the piano and is a member of the Piccolo Children’s Choir, which recently had the chance to perform with the country’s Philharmonic Orchestra. Jovan shares Lara and Irina’s passion for performance, and has a number of awards and titles to his name, including runner-up at the Hip-Hop World Cup in 2018!

• Gaia Gambuzza – Diamonds In The Skies – Malta 🇲🇹

13 year old Gaia Gambuzza lives in Mosta, Malta, with her family and Joy the Shih Tzu. She started attending sessions at a local performing arts school at the age of 4, which is where she discovered her love of singing. In the future Gaia would like to juggle being a professional vocalist while studying to be a speech-language pathologist – as she’s fascinated by the subject. Her favourite artists are The Weeknd, Dua Lipa, George Ezra, and Lizzo.

• Nicolas Alves – Anos 70 – Portugal 🇵🇹

Nicolas Alves lives with his family in Torres Vedras, a town near Lisbon. His parents are from Brazil but Nicolas was born in England, where he lived until the age of 10. The young rockstar found success on The Voice Kids in Portugal, gaining notoriety for his version of The Four Season’s Beggin’ – a song recently popularised by Eurovision winners Måneskin. He has a cat called Ben and a dog named Rocky, and in his free time Nicolas likes to play guitar with his brothers, as well as trying out new recipes. Amongst his favourite artists are Queen and Elvis Presley – so he should get on well with France’s Lissandro, who has similar tastes!

• Katarina Savić – Svet Bez Granica – Serbia 🇷🇸

Katarina Savić enjoys singing, ballet dancing, and playing her trombone. The 13 year old was discovered after an open call for song submissions earlier in the year, and will follow in the footsteps of Jovana & Dunja who performed Oči Deteta for Serbia in Paris last year. The young singer lives with her family in Belgrade, alongside her cat Leon, and a frog named En. Katarina’s favourite artists are BTS, Taylor Swift, and Harry Styles.

• Lissandro – Oh Maman! – France 🇫🇷

Lissandro is a 13 years old from the small village of Moselle in east France. He sings in 5 languages, is a professional cartoon dubber, and has a love of all things rock and pop, from Elvis Presley, to the American crooners, through to Bruno Mars. Being on stage is the best way for this jack of all trades to share his passion for singing, and he describes Junior Eurovision as the ‘adventure of a lifetime’. When not performing, Lissandro looks after his pet rabbit, Calinou, and a pug named Roxy.

• Laura Bączkiewic – To The Moon – Poland 🇵🇱

Laura has a lot of pets! Greta and Roksana, her dogs, Helena and Stasio, her cats, and also a bunny rabbit named Scarlet! When she isn’t singing or tending to her furry friends, she enjoys watching cover versions on YouTube, and following her favourite artists: Adele, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Duncan Laurence, and Poland’s previous Junior Eurovision participant Sara James.

• David Charlin – Jer-Ana (Mother Earth) – Kazakhstan 🇰🇿

12 year old singer-songwriter David Charlin lives with his family in Almaty. The young performer won the televised talent competition Baqytty Bala; the chance to represent Kazakhstan at Junior Eurovision was his reward. This is great news for David, as competing in Yerevan combines his three favourite things: singing, dancing, and travelling. When he’s not hard at work, he also enjoys skiing, chess, drawing, tennis, and perfecting his drone flying skills – as he learns to shoot and edit aerial footage!

• Mariam Bigvava – I Believe – Georgia 🇬🇪

Mariam Bigvava has been singing since she was very little and it’s long been her ambition to represent Georgia on the Junior Eurovision stage. Since the age of 7 she has been mastering folk songs and traditional instruments, as she relishes the challenge of learning new music. When quizzed on her likes and dislikes, the young singer revealed she enjoys playing football and listening to Billie Eilish, but is less of a fan of cauliflowers and tomatoes. Mariam lives in Tbilisi with her pet parrot Shako, and a dog named Maze. She describes them as ‘funny but restless.’

• Sophie Lennon – Solas – Ireland 🇮🇪

Sophie Lennon lives in a small village called Mayobridge in County Down, where she began her musical journey. The 13 year old already has a good deal of stage experience under her belt, having played Young Fiona in Shrek: The Musical (Belfast) and winning BBC School Soloist of the Year 2022. The young singer enjoys making funny TikToks with her mum, joking: ‘she doesn’t like it, but I drag her in anyway!’. Sophie is also a registered carer for her disabled older brother, Connor, which takes up a lot of her spare time.
