ESC 2020 – Selezioni Nazionali – 2ª Semi-Finale

images

Vincent Bueno (December 10, 1985), is an Austrian-Filipino singer who is based in Austria and the Philippines.

On January 12, 2008, he became the winner of the ORF programme, Musical! Die Show (Musical! The Show), an Austrian television musical contest.

He also served as a support act for Filipino singer Sarah Geronimo’s concert in Vienna. On January 18, 2008, Bueno told the Philippine media of his plans to debut in the Philippines. He then made his first performance in Philippine Television on ASAP XV on August 29, 2010. He also signed a contract under Star Records, an ABS-CBN Entertainment Group Company, to pursue his music career in the Philippines.

He will represent Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands with the song, “Alive”.

Career:

Early EducationBueno started dancing at the age of 4. He later graduated in music and performing arts at the ViennaConservatory of Music. Bueno is also a composer of R&B music, having taken special courses in acting, dancing, and singing. At age 11, he managed to play 4 musical instruments—piano, guitar, drums, and bass guitar. His father was a former vocalist and a 1970 local band lead guitarist.

Musical! Die Show: Vincent defeated Eva Klikovics and Gudrun Ihninger of 10 contestants / finalists and earned the top prize of 50,000 EUR (3 million PHP) plus the “chance of a lifetime”. He first performed “Grease Lightning” (from musical Grease), and then “The Music of the Night” (from The Phantom of the Opera). Vincent got 67% of televotes (landslide victory) from televiewers in Austria and nearby countries. Second-placer Austrian Eva Klikovics received 37% of televotes, and Gudrun Ihninger was eliminated earlier and salvaged third place. The television show is a reality-based talent contest that considers contestants’ theatrical and dancing skills or abilities, which in turn are judged by televiewers’ vote by phone or SMS.

The contest Musical! Die Show began an elimination round on November 23, 2007 with 10 contestants from the 400 beginners who auditioned. Austria and other European televiewers rated / televoted the finalists. “Hair” was Vincent’s first number, and he performed the memorable songs “I Wanna Be Like You” from Jungle Book, “Superstar” from Jesus Christ Superstar, “Why God Why?” from Miss Saigon, “Singin’ in the Rain”, and the German “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!” from Mary Poppins. Musical! Die Show, a project of Austrian broadcasting TV ORF, is not an ordinary singing competition like Starmania or American Idol. Completely different, it involves theatre arts and musical and acting abilities. Specifically, unlike Western and Asian talent show contests, Musical! Die Show is comparatively more difficult and challenging due to its theatre leanings. Aspirants act and sing à la Broadway, and instead of merely singing pop tunes, they choose Broadway musical theater repertoire.

ReactionsMiss Saigon veterans (from the original cast of the West End production of Miss Saigon in 1989) Isay Alvarez and Robert Seña called Vincent Bueno, a phenomenon: “He’s very good. Ibang klase siya. Pinanood ko siya nang todo. Impressed kami pareho ni Robert sa kanya. (He’s a class of his own. I watched him closely. Robert and I are impressed with him). Vincent is a phenomenon. Marami siyang patataubin na singer lalo na sa Broadway musical singing. Kasi, bagay na bagay ang kanyang boses sa gano’ng genre. (He can upstage many local singers, especially in Broadway musical singing, because his voice fits the genre).”

Foray to the Philippines: His first performance on Philippine television’s ASAP XV was on August 29, 2010, where he was first introduced as the “Pinoy Champ Austrian Singer”. He was on ASAP for some weeks. He also signed a contract under Star Records. However, he returned to Austria on September 14, 2010 to accomplish his pending tasks there. He then went back to the Philippines by early January 2011 to continue his music career.

On October 28, 2011, Vincent held his first ever mini-concert at Teatrino in Greenhills, San Juan, entitled “Got Fridays with Vincent Bueno”.

Eurovision Song ContestOn December 12 2019, ORF internally selected Vincent to represent Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. His song “Alive” will be revealed at a later date.

Image and Artistry: Vincent’s vocal range can be classified as tenor. His voice can be described as smooth, mellow, and sometimes mildly abrasive (see vocal belting). He often sings with a vibrato in his voice, and also incorporates beatboxing into many of his songs.

Though Vincent has one studio album and a single in German, he has also released some unofficial music videos and audios on his official YouTube and Facebook accounts.

Personal life: Both his parents are of Ilocano origin. Along with his native German language, Vincent can speak English and conversational Tagalog.

“Alive” is a song performed by Austrian-Filipino singer Vincent Bueno. It was chosen to represent Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 on 12 December 2019.

Background: After being selected to represent Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, Bueno said, “Wow, even thinking about the fact that I am going to participate in the song contest gives me goosebumps. The Eurovision Song Contest is like the Eurocup for musicians and singers. The huge stage, all those artists doing their absolute best, all the songwriters and producers of Europe gathering in one place to celebrate their work while at the same time stepping into the ring – it is breathtaking and formidable. Let’s go Austria!”.

Eurovision Song Contest:  The song will represent Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, after Vincent Bueno was internally by the Austrian broadcaster ÖRF on 12 December 2019. The song will perform in one of the two semi-finals. Czech Republic participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song “”, performed by . The Czech national broadcaster, Česká televize (Czech Television – ČT) organised the national final Eurovision Song CZ 2020 in order to select the Czech entry for the 2020 contest in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

1.BackgroundPrior to the 2020 Contest, Czech Republic had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest eight times since its first entry in 2007. The nation competed in the contest on three consecutive occasions between 2007 and 2009 without qualifying to the final: in 2007Kabát performing “Malá dáma” placed 28th (last) in the semi-final achieving only one point, in 2008Tereza Kerndlová performing “Have Some Fun” placed 18th (second to last) in her semi-final scoring nine points, in 2009Gipsy.cz performing the song “Aven Romale” placed 18th (last) in their semi-final failing to score any points. The Czech broadcaster withdrew from the contest between 2010 and 2014 citing reasons such as low viewing figures and poor results for their absence. In 2015, Czech Republic returned to the contest and once again failed to qualify to the final with the song “Hope Never Dies” performed by Marta Jandová and Václav Noid Bárta, placing 13th in their semi-final with 33 points. In 2016, Czech Republic was represented by Gabriela Gunčíková and the song “I Stand”. The country qualified for the final and placed 25th out of 26 entries. This marked the first qualification to the final for the Czech Republic since they debuted in the contest in 2007. In 2018, Czech Republic was represented by Mikolas Josef with the song “Lie to Me”. The song finished in sixth place with 281 points, achieving their highest finish in the contest and their first appearance in the top ten. In 2019, Czech Republic was represented by Lake Malawi with the song “Friend of a friend”. The song placed on eleventh place with 157 points, achieving their second best result in the contest.

Estonia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song “”, performed by . The Estonian national broadcaster, Eesti Rahvusringhääling (Estonian Public Broadcasting – ERR) organised the national final Eesti Laul 2020 in order to select the Estonian entry for the 2020 contest in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

1.Background: Prior to the 2020 Contest, Estonia had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest twenty-five times since its first entry in 1994, winning the contest on one occasion in 2001 with the song “Everybody” performed by Tanel Padar, Dave Benton and 2XL. Following the introduction of semi-finals for the 2004, Estonia has, to this point, managed to qualify to the final on five occasions. In 2019, “Storm” performed by Victor Crone allowed Estonia to qualify to the Grand Final once again, in which the song placed twentieth.

The Estonian national broadcaster, Eesti Rahvusringhääling (ERR), broadcasts the event within Estonia and organises the selection process for the nation’s entry. ERR confirmed Estonia’s participation at the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest on 6 August 2019. Since their debut, the Estonian broadcaster has organised national finals that feature a competition among multiple artists and songs in order to select Estonia’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. The Eesti Laul competition has been organised since 2009 in order to select Estonia’s entry. Before that, the Eurolaul format had been used.

2.Before Eurovision:

Eesti Laul 2020Eesti Laul 2020 will be the twelfth edition of the Estonian national selection Eesti Laul, which will select Estonia’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. The competition will consist of 24 entries competing in two semi-finals on 13 February and 15 February 2020, leading to a twelve-song final on 29 February 2020.

FormatThe format of the competition includes two semi-finals on 13 February and 15 February 2020 and a final on 29 February 2020. Twelve songs will compete in each semi-final and the top six from each semi-final will qualify, completing the twelve-song lineup in the final. The results of the semi-finals will be determined by a 50/50 combination of votes from a professional jury and public televoting for the first five entries, then the final spot was decided in a second round of voting, televote only. The winning song in the final will be selected over two rounds of voting: the first round results will select the top three songs via the 50/50 combination of jury and public voting and the second round will decide the winner from those three songs, televote only.

2.1.Competing entries: On 1 September 2019, ERR opened the submission period for artists and composers to submit their entries up until 6 November 2019 through an online upload platform. Foreign songwriters were also eligible to submit songs. A fee was imposed on songs being submitted to the contest, with 25 Euros for Estonian language songs and 50 Euros for songs in other languages. From all 178 songs submitted to ERR, a jury panel selected the 24 songs for the competition, with the selected entries being announced on 13 and 14 November 2019. The selection jury consisted of Andres Puusepp, Anu Varusk, Birgit Sarrap, Daniel Levi, Eda-Ines Etti, Hendrik Sal-Saller, Jüri Makarov, Kaupo Karelson, Lauri Hermann, Madis Aesma, Maiken, Owe Petersell, Sten Teppan and Vaido Pannel.

Serbia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song “”, performed by . The Serbian national broadcaster, Radio Television of Serbia (Радио-телевизија Србије, Radio-televizija Srbije – РТС / RTS) organised the national final Beovizija 2020 (Беовизија 2020) in order to select the Serbia entry for the 2020 contest in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Background: Prior to the 2020 Contest, Serbia had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest twelve times since its first entry in 2007, winning the contest with their debut entry “Molitva” performed by Marija Šerifović.[1] Since 2007, eight out of eleven of Serbia’s entries have featured in the final with the nation failing to qualify in 2009, 2013 and in 2017, missing out 2014 contest.

The Serbian national broadcaster, Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), broadcasts the event within Serbia and organises the selection process for the nation’s entry. RTS confirmed their intentions to participate at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest on 6 August 2018.[2] Between 2007 and 2009, Serbia used the Beovizija national final in order to select their entry. However, after their 2009 entry, “Cipela” performed by Marko Kon and Milaan, failed to qualify Serbia to the final, the broadcaster shifted their selection strategy to selecting specific composers to create songs for artists. In 2010, RTS selected Goran Bregović to compose songs for a national final featuring three artists, while in 2011 Kornelije KovačAleksandra Kovač and Kristina Kovač were tasked with composing one song each. In 2012, the internal selection of Željko Joksimović and the song “Nije ljubav stvar” secured the country’s second highest placing in the contest to this point, placing third. In 2013, RTS returned to an open national final format and organized the Beosong competition. The winning entry, “Ljubav je svuda” performed by Moje 3, failed to qualify Serbia to the final at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest. In 2015, RTS selected Vladimir Graić, the composer of Serbia’s 2007 Eurovision Song Contest winning entry “Molitva”, to compose songs for a national final featuring three artists.[3] After two internal selections in 2016 and 2017, RTS announced that Beovizija will return as a national selection from 2018 onwards, managing to qualify every year to the final since.

Before Eurovision:

Beovizija 2020 Beovizija 2020 will be the 10th edition of the Serbian national final Beovizija to select Serbia’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019. The contest will consist of two semi finals and the final to be held in late February 2020.

Competing entries: Artists and songwriters were able to submit their song entries from August 2019 to 9 December 2019. Songwriters of any nationality were allowed to submit entries, but songs were required to be performed by citizens of the Republic of Serbia and in one of the official languages of the Republic of Serbia. RTS received 90 entries, and a selection comitee chose 24 entries for the national final.[4][5]

◄2019 Darude feat. Sebastian Rejman – “Look Away” • 2020 Aksel – “Looking Back” • 2021►

Finland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song “”, performed by . The Finnish national broadcaster, Yleisradio Oy (General Radio or General Broadcast; Rundradion Ab – Yle) organised the national final Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2020 (Contest for New Music 2020) in order to select the Finnish entry for the 2020 contest in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

1.Background: Prior to the 2020 Contest, Finland had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest fifty-three times since their first entry in 1961. Finland has won the contest once in 2006 with the song “Hard Rock Hallelujah” performed by Lordi. In the 2019 contest, “Look Away” performed by Darude feat. Sebastian Rejman failed to qualify for the final, finishing in 17th (last) place in the first semi-final with 23 points.

The Finnish national broadcaster, Yleisradio (Yle), broadcasts the event within Finland and organises the selection process for the nation’s entry. Yle confirmed their intentions to participate at the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest on 3 June 2019. Finland’s entries for the Eurovision Song Contest have been selected through national final competitions that have varied in format over the years. Between 1961 and 2011, a selection show that was often titled Euroviisukarsinta highlighted that the purpose of the program was to select a song for Eurovision. However, since 2012, the broadcaster has organised the selection show Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK), which focuses on showcasing new music with the winning song being selected as the Finnish contest entry for that year. Along with their participation confirmation, the broadcaster also announced that the Finnish entry for the 2020 contest would be selected through Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2020, reverting back to an open selection in order to determine their Eurovision entry and song for Eurovision 2020.

2.Before Eurovision:

Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2020Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2020 was the ninth edition of Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK), the music competition that selects Finland’s entries for the Eurovision Song Contest. Yle will announce the selected acts on 21 January 2020. The show will take place on 7 March 2020 at Tampere, and the winning entry will be determined by public voting and the votes a jury panel.

2.1.Competing entries: Yle opened a submission period between 1 November 2019 and 8 November 2019 in order for interested parties to submit their entries. At least one of the writers and the lead singer(s) had to hold Finnish citizenship or live in Finland permanently in order for the entry to qualify to compete. The submitted songs were not allowed to exceed three minutes, but could contain lyrics in any language. A ten-member expert panel appointed by Yle selected six entries for the competition from the received submissions. The competing entries will be presented during a press conference on 21 January 2020.

2.1.1.Final – The final will take place on 7 March 2020 where six acts will compete. The winner was selected by a 50/50 combination of public votes and jury votes.

Georgia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song “”, performed by Tornike Kipiani. The Georgian national broadcaster, Georgian Public Broadcasting საქართველოს საზოგადოებრივი მაუწყებელი, sakartvelos sazogadoebrivi mauts’q’ebeli – GPB, სსმ) used for the second year in a row, Georgian Idol for selecting their representative, though this time the entry will be selected internally for the 2020 contest in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

1.Background: Prior to the 2020 contest, Georgia have participated in the Eurovision Song Contest eleven times since their first entry in 2007. The nation’s highest placing in the contest, to this point, has been ninth place, which was achieved on two occasions: in 2010 with the song “Shine” performed by Sofia Nizharadze and in 2011 with the song “One More Day” performed by Eldrine. The nation briefly withdrew from the contest in 2009 after the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) rejected the Georgian entry, “We Don’t Wanna Put In”, for perceived political references to Vladimir Putin who was the Russian Prime Minister at the time. The withdrawal and fallout was tied to tense relations between Georgia and then host country Russia, which stemmed from the 2008 Russo-Georgian War. Following the introduction of semi-finals, Georgia has, to this point, failed to qualify to the final on four occasions.

The Georgian national broadcaster, Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB), broadcasts the event within Georgia and organises the selection process for the nation’s entry. GPB confirmed their intentions to participate at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest on 2 October 2017. Georgia has selected their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest both through national finals and internal selections in the past. In 2013 and 2014, GPB opted to internally select the Georgian entry, in 2015, the Georgian entry was selected via a national final, and in 2016, the artist was internally selected while the song was chosen in a national final. For their 2017 participation, the entry was selected through a national final. In 2018 the artist was internally selected. In 2019, the entry was fully selected through Georgian Idol for the first time ever. Oto Nemsadze failed to qualify to the Saturday final with “Keep On Going”, achieving just a fourteenth place in the semi-final.

2.Before Eurovision: For the second year in a row, the Georgian delegation decided to use the talent show Georgian Idol as the method for selecting their representative. This year, however, the show starts two months earlier and a song will be internally selected for the winner of the show.

Georgian Idol:

Presentatrice: Ruska Makashvili / რუსკა მაყაშვილი

Jury:  This edition of Georgian Idol has a four-member jury with the power to decide what contestants will advance to the live shows and comment on every performance giving feedback to the artists. The four members are:

  • Tinatin Berdzenishvili / თინათინ ბერძენიშვილი – Director General of the Georgian Public Broadcaster with over 20 years of experience in the field[6], Head of EBU Gender Balance Initiative.
  • David Evgenidze / დავით ევგენიძე – Songwriter, part of the jury for the second edition of Ranina. He will produce the Georgian entry in Eurovision 2020.
  • Natia Todua / ნათია თოდუა – Winner of the seventh season of The Voice of Germany, participant at Unser Lied für Lissabon with My Own Way.
  • David Aladashvili / დავით ალადაშვილი – Pianist, studied at the Tbilisi Special Music School and at New York’s Juilliard School with several honors and awards at an international level. He was also part of the jury for the second edition of Ranina.

The Latvian national broadcaster, Latvijas Televīzija (Latvian Television – LTV) organised the national final Supernova 2020 in order to select the Latvian entry for the 2020 contest in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Portugal participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song “”, performed by . The Portuguese national broadcaster, Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (Radio and Television of Portugal – RTP) organised the national final Festival da Canção 2020 in order to select the Portuguese entry for the 2020 contest in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

1.Background: Prior to the 2020 Contest, Portugal had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest fifty-one times since its first entry in 1964. Since semi-finals were introduced into the contest in 2004, Portugal has failed to reach the final eight times. Portugal held the record for the most appearances in the contest without a win until 2017 when they won in Kiev, Ukraine, with Salvador Sobral’s entry, “Amar pelos dois”. In 2019, Portugal was represented by Conan Osíris and the song “Telemóveis”. The country failed to qualify to the final, ending in fifteenth place in the semi-final with 51 points.

The Portuguese broadcaster for the 2020 Contest, who broadcasts the event in Portugal and organises the selection process for its entry, will be Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP). Portugal has most commonly selected their entry through the national final Festival da Canção except between 2003 and 2005 where the broadcaster used internal selections and the talent competition Operação triunfo to select their entry. The broadcaster will organize the 2020 edition of Festival da Canção in order to select the Portuguese entry for the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest.

2.Before Eurovision:

Festival da Canção 2020: Festival da Canção 2020 was the 54th edition of Festival da Canção, the music competition that selects Portugal’s entries for the Eurovision Song Contest. Three live shows were broadcast during a two-week period: two semi-finals on 22 and 29 February and the final on 7 March 2019.

The competition featured sixteen songs written by professional and amateur composers, who were also responsible for choosing the performer(s) for their entry. Each semi-final featured eight songs from which four advanced to the final. Results during the semi-finals were determined by the sum of the votes from a room jury panel (50%) and public (50%). In the final, the winner was determined by the sum of the votes from regional jury panels (50%) and public (50%). For the third consecutive year, the competition had no language restrictions.

On 7 November 2019, RTP revealed the names of the sixteen participating composers: fourteen directly invited by RTP, one selected by Antena 1’s radio show MasterClass, and one selected from an open call of 320 submissions received by RTP.
