La selezione dei partecipanti all’Eurovision Song Contest spetta alle emittenti televisive competenti dei singoli stati. A loro spetta la scelta del metodo di selezione: una selezione interna (quindi cantante e/o brano vengono scelti dall’emittente stessa), come accade solitamente per San Marino o Australia, oppure può organizzare un festival musicale (il pubblico sceglie un vincitore che viene invitato a partecipare all’Eurovision Song Contest), come accade in Norvegia (Norsk Melodi Grand Prix), Svezia (Melodifestivalen), Italia (Festival di Sanremo), Grecia (Ellinikós Telikós) e molti altri. Il vincitore dell’eventuale festival però non è obbligato a partecipare all’Eurovision Song Contest né tanto meno è obbligato ad esibirsi con la canzone vincitrice, ad esempio Iva Zanicchi ha vinto il Festival di Sanremo nel 1969, in coppia con Bobby Solo, con la canzone “Zingara”, ma all’Eurovision Song Contest si presentò da sola con il brano “Due grosse lacrime bianche”. Con il tempo buona parte delle emittenti sta abbandonando la selezione interna in favore del festival musicale.

I partecipanti non devono obbligatoriamente avere vincoli di nazionalità (ad esempio nel 1988 la Svizzera vinse con la cantante canadese Céline Dion) e le canzoni non hanno restrizioni riguardanti la lingua (anche se nelle prime edizioni vigeva un obbligo di cantare in una delle lingue ufficiali del proprio paese).

L’Eurovision Song Contest 2021 sarà la 65ª edizione dell’annuale concorso canoro e si terrà presso l’Ahoy Rotterdam a Rotterdam, nei Paesi Bassi.

Il 18 marzo 2020 l’Unione europea di radiodiffusione (UER) ha annunciato la cancellazione dell’edizione 2020 a causa della pandemia di COVID-19 che ha coinvolto diverse regioni del mondo tra cui, più duramente, la Cina e l’Europa. Successivamente è stato annunciato che la manifestazione verrà riorganizzata nel maggio 2021 e sono in corso discussioni con le emittenti olandesi NPO, NOS, AVROTROS, incaricate di organizzare la precedente edizione, e la città di Rotterdam sulla riorganizzazione dell’evento nella stessa città o meno.

Il 16 maggio 2020, durante la trasmissione dello show Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light, è stato confermato che la città Rotterdam avrebbe ospitato l’evento.

A seguito della cancellazione l’UER ha valutato la possibilità di consentire ai brani selezionati di competere nel 2021; tuttavia, il 20 marzo 2020, è stato confermato dal gruppo di referenza che, in conformità al regolamento, ciò non sarebbe avvenuto, lasciando però la possibilità alle singole emittenti di selezionare nuovamente i rappresentanti annunciati per il 2020.

Il 16 maggio 2020 l’EBU-UER e AVROTROS hanno confermato che lo slogan ufficiale dell’evento resterà Open Up, il medesimo pianificato per l’edizione annullata.

France will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands with the song “Voilà” performed by Barbara Pravi. Their entry was selected through the national selection Eurovision France, c’est vous qui décidez!, organised by the French broadcaster France Télévisions in collaboration with the television channel France 2.

As a member of the “Big 5”, France automatically qualified to compete in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Background: Prior to the 2021 Contest, France had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest sixty-two times since its debut as one of seven countries to take part in 1956. France first won the contest in 1958 with “Dors, mon amour” performed by André Claveau. In the 1960s, they won three times, with “Tom Pillibi” performed by Jacqueline Boyer in 1960, “Un premier amour” performed by Isabelle Aubret in 1962 and “Un jour, un enfant” performed by Frida Boccara, who won in 1969 in a four-way tie with the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. France’s fifth victory came in 1977, when Marie Myriam won with the song “L’oiseau et l’enfant”. France have also finished second four times, with Paule Desjardins in 1957, Catherine Ferry in 1976, Joëlle Ursull in 1990 and Amina in 1991, who lost out to Sweden’s Carola in a tie-break. Since 2000, France has managed to place within the top ten four times, with Natasha St-Pier finishing fourth in 2001, Sandrine François finishing fifth in 2002, Patricia Kaas finishing eighth in 2009 and Amir finishing sixth in 2016.

The French national broadcaster, France Télévisions, broadcasts the event within France and delegates the selection of the nation’s entry to the television channel France 2. The French broadcaster had used both national finals and internal selection to choose the French entry in the past. Between 2015 and 2017, the broadcaster had opted to internally select the French entry. In 2018 and 2019, the broadcaster introduced the multi-artist competition format Destination Eurovision to select the French entry. In June 2020, France Télévisions announced that a new national final format would take place to select the French entry for the 2021 contest.

Before Eurovision: 

Eurovision France, c’est vous qui décidez!: Eurovision France, c’est vous qui décidez was the national final organised by France 2 to select France’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021. The competition took place on 30 January 2021, produced at the France Télévisions studios Paris and was hosted by Stéphane Bern and Laurence Boccolini. The show was broadcast on France 2, online via the broadcaster’s official website france.tv as well as on TV5Monde and TV5 Québec Canada on a time delay.

Competing entries:France 2 opened a submission period on 29 June 2020 in order for interested artists and songwriters to submit their proposals through an online submission form up until the deadline on 30 September 2020. Songs were required to contain a majority of French language lyrics with a free language allowance for the remaining lyrics. At the closing of the deadline, the French broadcaster received 700 submissions. A selection committee reviewed the received submissions, shortlisted twenty entries for an audition round which took place at the Apollo Théâtre in Paris and selected twelve to compete in the national final. The competing artists and songs were announced on 9 December 2020.

Controversy: At the final gala of C’est vous qui décidez! controversy was generated when the public thought that the votes were manipulated so that Barbara Pravi won, since the other 2 favorites, Andriamed and Philippine were left out of the final phase. Many voices suspect that the French delegation would be manipulating the voting again, just as some think it was done at the 2020 Junior Eurovision Song Contest, leaving the favorite, Spain, the only candidate without votes and granting the maximum votes to countries, that were not favorites in the betting.

At Eurovision: The Eurovision Song Contest 2021 is scheduled to take place at Rotterdam Ahoy in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and will consist of two semi-finals held on 18 and 20 May, and the grand final on 22 May 2021. As the Netherlands is the host country of the contest, their entry for 2021 will directly qualify to the final, along with Big 5 countries France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. The top ten countries from each semi-final progress to the grand final.

Germany will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, having selected Jendrik Sigwart as their representative with the song “I Don’t Feel Hate”, following a multi-stage internal selection. 

Background: Prior to the 2021 Contest, Germany had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 63 times since its debut as one of seven countries to take part in 1956. Germany has won the contest on two occasions: in 1982 with the song “Ein bißchen Frieden” performed by Nicole and in 2010 with the song “Satellite” performed by Lena. Germany, to this point, has been noted for having competed in the contest more than any other country; they have competed in every contest since the first edition in 1956 except for the 1996 contest when the nation was eliminated in a pre-contest elimination round. In 2018, the German entry “You Let Me Walk Alone” performed by Michael Schulte placed fourth of twenty-six competing songs with 340 points. In 2019, the duo S!sters with the song “Sister” finished in 25th place with 24 points, receiving nul points from the televote. In 2020, Ben Dolic was set to represent Germany with the song “Violent Thing” before the contest’s cancellation.

The German national broadcaster, ARD, broadcasts the event within Germany and delegated the selection of the nation’s entry to the regional broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). In 2018, the multi-artist national final Unser Lied für Lissabon determined both the song and performer to compete at Eurovision for Germany. In 2019, NDR organised a national final with the same procedure. In 2020, NDR opted for a multi-stage internal selection, appointing two independent jury panels to select their entry.

Before Eurovision.

Internal selection: On 6 February 2021, NDR confirmed that Jendrik Sigwart will represent Germany in the 2021 contest. The song, entitled “I Don’t Feel Hate”, was released on 25 February 2021.

At Eurovision: Thehe Eurovision Song Contest 2021 is scheduled to take place at Rotterdam Ahoy in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and will consist of two semi-finals held on 18 and 20 May, and the grand final on 22 May 2021. As Germany is a member of the Big 5, their entry will directly qualify to the final, along with France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and host country the Netherlands. In addition to their participation in the final, Germany is also required to broadcast and vote in one of the two semi-finals.

Italy will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021. Italian broadcaster RAI announced in October 2020 that the winning performer(s) of the Sanremo Music Festival 2021, later turning out to be Måneskin with “Zitti e buoni”, would earn the right to represent the nation at the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The Sanremo Music Festival 2021 (Italian: 71º Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo 2021) was the 71st edition of the annual Sanremo Music Festival, a television song contest held in the Teatro Ariston of Sanremo and organised and broadcast by RAI. The show was held between 2 and 6 March 2021.

The show was presented by Amadeus, who also served as the artistic director for the competition. Fiorello returned as co-host after appearing as a regular guest in the previous edition.

Background. Prior to the 2021 Contest, Italy had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest forty-four times since its first entry during the inaugural contest in 1956. Since then, Italy has won the contest on two occasions: in 1964 with the song “Non ho l’età” performed by Gigliola Cinquetti and in 1990 with the song “Insieme: 1992” performed by Toto Cutugno. Italy has withdrawn from the Eurovision Song Contest a number of times with their most recent absence spanning from 1998 until 2010. Their return in 2011 with the song “Madness of Love”, performed by Raphael Gualazzi, placed second—their highest result, to this point, since their victory in 1990. In 2018, Ermal Meta and Fabrizio Moro represented Italy with the song “Non mi avete fatto niente”, placing fifth with 308 points. In the 2019 edition, Mahmood represented Italy with the song “Soldi”, placing second with 472 points. In 2020, Diodato was set to represent the nation with the song “Fai rumore” before the contest’s cancellation.

Between 2011 and 2013, the broadcaster used the Sanremo Music Festival as an artist selection pool where a special committee would select one of the competing artist, independent of the results in the competition, as the Eurovision entrant. The selected entrant was then responsible for selecting the song they would compete with. For 2014, RAI forwent using the Sanremo Music Festival artist lineup and internally selected their entry. Since 2015, the winning artist of the Sanremo Music Festival is rewarded with the opportunity to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest, although in 2016 the winner declined and the broadcaster appointed the runner-up as the Italian entrant.

Artist selection: 

Sanremo Music Festival (71st edition) 2021: Italian broadcaster RAI confirmed that the performer that would represent Italy at the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest would be selected from the competing artists at the Sanremo Music Festival 2021. According to the rules of Sanremo 2021, the winner of the festival earns the right to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest, but in case the artist is not available or refuses the offer, the organisers of the event reserve the right to choose another participant via their own criteria. The competition took place between 2 and 6 March 2021 with the winner being selected on the last day of the festival.

Twenty-six artists competed in Sanremo 2021. Among the competing artists were former Eurovision Song Contest entrants Francesca Michielin and Ermal Meta, who represented Italy in 2016 and 2018 respectively. Additionally, Noemi and Francesca Michielin & Fedez’s songs were co-written by Mahmood, who represented Italy in 2019. The performers were:

Il settantunesimo Festival di Sanremo si svolgerà al Teatro Ariston di Sanremo dal 2 al 6 marzo 2021 e sarà condotto, per il secondo anno consecutivo, da Amadeus, il quale sarà anche il direttore artistico; nel corso delle serate sarà affiancato ancora una volta da Fiorello, come avvenuto nell’edizione precedente.

Come nell’edizione precedente, la competizione avrà due categorie principali: una categoria Campioni composta da 26 cantanti e una categoria Nuove proposte composta da 8 cantanti (di cui 2 selezionati da Area Sanremo).

La scenografia sarà curata da Gaetano Castelli, storico scenografo del festival, mentre la regia e la direzione della fotografia saranno affidati rispettivamente a Stefano Vicario e a Mario Catapano, tutti presenti la scorsa edizione del festival.

Come avviene per regolamento dal 2015, il vincitore del Festival rappresenterà l’Italia all’Eurovision Song Contest 2021 a Rotterdam, salvo rinuncia.

Per la prima volta dal 2005, la kermesse si terrà interamente nel mese di marzo.

Il 29 dicembre 2020 viene annunciata la presenza per tutte le serate di Achille Lauro e Zlatan Ibrahimović in qualità di ospiti fissi e di Elodie come co-conduttrice per una serata. Il 23 gennaio 2021 viene annunciata anche la presenza di Matilda De Angelis in qualità di co-conduttrice per una serata.

Format: The 2021 edition of the Sanremo Music Festival took place at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo, organized by the Italian public broadcaster RAI. The artistic director and the presenter for the competition was Amadeus, for the second consecutive year.

For the first time in its history, the 2021 Sanremo Music Festival took place without a live audience, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Presenters: Shortly after the end of the 2020 edition, RAI officially confirmed Amadeus as the presenter of the 71st edition of the Sanremo Music Festival. Together with Amadeus, Italian comedian and television presenter Fiorello returned, after appearing as a regular guest in the previous edition, to cover the role of co-host for the second consecutive year. Together with Amadeus there were five female co-hosts, alternating during the five evenings: Matilda De Angelis, Elodie, Vittoria Ceretti, Barbara Palombelli and Beatrice Venezi. British supermodel Naomi Campbell was set to participate as co-host in the first evening, but due to restrictions imposed in United States for the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic, she had to give up the aforementioned role.

Voting: Voting occurred through the combination of four methods:

  • Public televoting, carried out via landline, mobile phone, the contest’s official mobile app, and online voting.
  • Jury of the Press Room, TV, Radio and Web.
  • Demoscopic jury, composed by music fans who voted from their homes via an electronic voting system managed by Ipsos.
  • Musicians and singers of the Sanremo Music Festival Orchestra.

Voting during the five evenings for Big Artist section:

  • First evening: Demoscopic jury.
  • Second evening: Demoscopic jury.
  • Third evening: Music and singers of the Sanremo Music Festival Orchestra.
  • Fourth evening: Jury of the Press Room, TV, Radio and Web.
  • Fifth evening: Televote. At the end, a ranking of the songs/artists was drawn up determined by the average of voting percentages obtained in all the evenings, determining the three finalist. To select the winner the voting systems had the following weight: 34% Public televoting; 33% Jury of the Press Room, TV, Radio and Web; 33% Demoscopic Jury.

Partecipanti: I sei artisti vincitori di Sanremo Giovani 2020 e i due vincitori di Area Sanremo che hanno acquisito il diritto di partecipare al Festival sono stati annunciati il 17 dicembre 2020, in diretta su Rai 1. Nel corso della stessa serata sono stati anche annunciati i nomi dei ventisei artisti e i relativi brani che faranno parte della sezione Campioni.

Newcomers’ section (Sezione Nuove Proposte): The artists competing in the Newcomers’ section were selected through two separate contests: Sanremo Giovani and Area Sanremo.

Sanremo Giovani 2020: On 7 October 2020, Rai Commission for Sanremo Music Festival 2021 announced a list of 961 acts, but only 61 artists coming from all Italian regions -excluding Basilicata and Valle d’Aosta- and from abroad were selected in the first phase.

On 20 October 2020, the jury of Sanremo Festival 2021 has selected the 20 semi-finalists. The selection was preceded by five late night shows on “AmaSanremo”, conducted by Amadeus and Riccardo Rossi, where the artists and their entries were presented and were selected the 10 finalist.

On 17 December 2020, the ten finalists performed their songs at Sanremo Casino in Sanremo, with the show Sanremo Giovani 2020 broadcast on Rai 1 presented by Amadeus and Riccardo Rossi. The six selected by the jury composed by Luca Barbarossa, Beatrice Venezi and Piero Pelù, televote and music commission were added to the two entries of Area Sanremo, for a total of eight young emerging artists in the category of the Newcomers’ section of the Sanremo Music Festival 2021. Gaudiano, Folcast, Greta Zuccoli, Davide Shorty, Wrongonyou and Avincola were chosen as contestants of the Newcomers’ section of the Sanremo Music Festival 2021.

Serate: 

  • Prima serata: Nella prima serata si esibiranno 10 dei 20 Campioni, ciascuno con il proprio brano in gara, votati dalla giuria demoscopica (50%) e dal televoto (50%). Al termine delle votazioni sarà stilata una classifica provvisoria dei 10 artisti in gara. Si esibiranno anche 4 delle 8 Nuove proposte, votate sempre dalla giuria demoscopica e dal televoto. Le due canzoni vincitrici accedono direttamente alla finale, previste nella quarta serata.
  • Seconda serata: Nella seconda serata si esibiscono i restanti 10 Campioni, votati con lo stesso meccanismo della prima serata. Al termine è stilata una seconda classifica che vede tutti i 20 artisti ed i rispettivi brani; le percentuali ottenute si ottengono sommando i voti della prima e della seconda serata. Si esibiscono le restanti 4 Nuove proposte con le stesse modalità della prima serata e con il medesimo sistema di votazione. Le due canzoni vincitrici accedono direttamente alla finale della quarta serata.
  • Terza serata: La terza serata sarà dedicata alle canzoni d’autore che fanno parte della musica italiana. Gli artisti, in questo caso, possono scegliere se essere accompagnati o meno da ospiti italiani o stranieri; tutte le esibizioni sono votate dai membri dell’orchestra e verrà stilata una nuova classifica con i voti ottenuti.
  • Quarta serata: Nella quarta serata si esibiscono tutti i 20 Campioni in gara con i propri brani, valutati questa volta dalla giuria della Sala Stampa, i cui voti si sommeranno a quelli delle serate precedenti e, di conseguenza, verrà stilata una nuova classifica con le percentuali ottenute. Si esibiscono le 4 Nuove proposte rimaste in gara con le stesse modalità delle serate precedenti. La votazione avviene con un sistema misto composto dalla giuria demoscopica (33%), da quella della Sala Stampa (33%) e dal televoto (34%). All’esito delle votazioni verrà stilata una classifica delle 4 canzoni eseguite e la prima classificata viene proclamata la canzone vincitrice delle Nuove Proposte.
  • Serata finale:Nel corso della serata finale si esibiscono nuovamente tutti i 20 Campioni con le proprie canzoni in gara; le votazioni avvengono con un sistema misto composto dalla giuria demoscopica (33%), da quella della Sala Stampa (33%) e dal televoto (34%), che determina la classifica definitiva dalla ventitreesima alla quarta posizione. Segue poi una nuova votazione per i primi tre classificati, grazie alla quale viene decretata la canzone vincitrice del Festival.

Esclusi: L’organizzazione tradizionalmente non comunica i nomi degli artisti della sezione Campioni che hanno inoltrato domanda ma non sono stati selezionati per le serate finali. Secondo alcune fonti, e dichiarazioni degli stessi cantanti, tra gli esclusi vi sarebbero: Morgan, Leo Gassmann[16], Statuto, Motta, Mr. Rain, Michele Bravi, The Kolors, Federico Rossi, Donatella Rettore, i Nomadi, Tommaso Paradiso, Mietta, Roberto Angelini, Tiromancino, Rossana Casale con Mariella Nava e Grazia Di Michele, Giulia Luzi, Loredana Errore, Marco Carta, Max Arduini, Fast Animals and Slow Kids[, Claudio Lippi, Giacomo Celentano, Jalisse, Simona Molinari, Alex Britti, Andrea Sannino, Zero Assoluto, Myss Keta, Anna Oxa e Giusy Ferreri.

Commissione musicale: Come è già accaduto durante l’edizione precedente, la commissione musicale lavora solo per la categoria delle Nuove Proposte. I membri della commissione musicale sono:

La quattordicesima edizione televisiva del concorso Sanremo Giovani si è svolta a Sanremo il 17 dicembre 2020. L’evento è stato trasmesso su Rai 1 e RaiPlay, condotto da Amadeus con la partecipazione di Riccardo Rossi, e su Rai Radio 2 commentato in diretta da Ema Stokholma.

La serata finale è stata preceduta da cinque puntate dedicate alle semifinali, intitolate AmaSanremo, condotte sempre da Amadeus con la partecipazione di Riccardo Rossi ed Ema Stokholma.

Tra i 961 candidati ne sono stati selezionati 61, dei quali solo 20 sono arrivati alle semifinali. Di questi 20 artisti solo 10 sono arrivati in finale; questi ultimi si sono sfidati per aggiudicarsi i sei posti disponibili nella sezione Nuove Proposte del Festival di Sanremo 2021. Ad esso si sono aggiunti anche altri 2 cantanti provenienti da Area Sanremo.

Fasi del concorso: Quest’anno sul tavolo del direttore artistico Amadeus e della Commissione musicale sono arrivate 961 domande di partecipazione, il numero più alto degli ultimi anni, con un incremento rispetto alla passata edizione di 119 unità, pari al 14 per cento. A guidare la classifica per Regione il Lazio con 179 partecipanti.

In particolare sono 867 cantanti singoli (336 donne e 531 uomini) e 94 gruppi. La maggior parte delle richieste è arrivata dal Sud (402 pari al 41,8 per cento), segue il Centro con 268 (27,9 per cento), il Nord con 257 (26,8 per cento). Sensibile aumento anche per le richieste di partecipazione dall’Estero, 34, pari al 3,5 per cento, quasi il triplo dello scorso anno.

La Commissione Musicale presieduta da Amadeus, in veste di direttore artistico, e composta da Claudio Fasulo, Gianmarco Mazzi, Massimo Martelli e Leonardo De Amicis, ha cominciato ad  ascoltare i brani durante la fase di iscrizione e proseguirà con gli ascolti nei prossimi giorni così da selezionare i primi 60 artisti che parteciperanno alle audizioni dal vivo che si terranno a Roma, il 19 e il 20 ottobre, presso la sede di Rai Radio in Via Asiago a Roma. A questi si aggiungerà di diritto il vincitore del Festival di Castrocaro 2020, il gruppo Watt.

Al termine delle audizioni, poi, saranno scelti 20 tra gruppi e artisti che parteciperanno alle “semifinali” in diretta, nella seconda serata di Rai1, all’interno della trasmissione condotta da Amadeus “AmaSanremo”, nelle cinque puntate del 29 ottobre e 5, 12, 19 e 26 novembre.

Solo alla fine di questo percorso si conosceranno i 10 finalisti dell’edizione di Sanremo Giovani, il contest, in onda in prima serata su Rai1 il 17 dicembre, che vedrà 10 “under 34” sfidarsi per conquistare la vittoria e aggiudicarsi 6 degli 8 posti disponibili (2 arriveranno da Area Sanremo) per partecipare al Festival di Sanremo 2021 nella categoria Nuove proposte.

Audizioni: Le audizioni, AmaSanremo e la sfida finale nella serata di Sanremo Giovani: tre tappe per arrivare sul Palco dell’Ariston per il 71° Festival della Canzone Italiana.

Ma la concorrenza è tanta: in sessantuno per quei sei posti al Festival e un countdown che comincia con le audizioni previste per 19 e 20 ottobre nella Sala A di Via Asiago a Roma, sede di Rai Radio di fronte alla Commissione Musicale presieduta da Amadeus, in veste di direttore artistico, e composta da Claudio Fasulo, Gianmarco Mazzi, Massimo Martelli e Leonardo De Amicis. Dopo la fase degli ascolti da parte della Commissione musicale che si è svolta man mano che arrivavano le iscrizioni al contest di Rai1, la vera sfida comincia adesso.

La divisione delle 61 potenziali Nuove Proposte (60 che hanno superato la prima fase degli ascolti più il vincitore del Festival di Castrocaro) vede 53 singoli (16 donne e 37 uomini) e 8 gruppi. Il Sud è in testa con 23 partecipanti, segue il Centro con 22 e chiude il Nord con 15; 3 invece i minori provenienti da Napoli (Campania), Roma (Lazio) e Milano (Lombardia).

Per le Regioni il Lazio domina la classifica con 15 canzoni in gara, poi la Campania con 11, la Lombardia con 8, la Puglia con 5, Emilia Romagna e Sicilia con 4, Toscana e Marche 3, Trentino Alto Adige con 2, Abruzzo-Piemonte-Sardegna-Umbria e Basilicata 1, Estero 1 (Rio De Janeiro-Brasile).

Al termine della 2 giorni di audizioni dal vivo saranno scelti i 20, tra gruppi e artisti singoli, che parteciperanno alle “semifinali” in diretta, nella trasmissione condotta da Amadeus “AmaSanremo”, cinque puntate in onda il giovedì, alle 22.45 su Rai1, dal 29 ottobre al 26 novembre.

“AmaSanremo” nasce con l’obiettivo di raccontare il percorso che i Giovani compiono per arrivare al Festival conciliando intrattenimento e gara musicale: nello studio Rai di via Asiago, insieme ad Amadeus, che come l’anno scorso è anche il direttore artistico del Festival, ci sarà una giuria televisiva composta da quattro celebrità della musica, dalla diversa personalità ed esperienza, che avranno il compito di votare le esibizioni. Sarà il loro giudizio sommato al Televoto e al voto della Commissione Musicale a decretare l’esito delle serate.

In studio ci saranno i 20 ragazzi ammessi alla selezioni di “AmaSanremo”: in ogni puntata, in cui si esibiranno quattro concorrenti – ma solo due saranno ammessi alla fase finale – un cantante famoso, che ha iniziato la propria carriera da Sanremo Giovani, sarà in studio a raccontare la propria esperienza al Festival, a dare consigli, a suggerire segreti del mestiere oltre a fare ascoltare i brani che gli hanno dato la celebrità.

Il cast sarà arricchito dalla presenza di un ospite “amico” diverso in ciascuna puntata, un personaggio proveniente dal mondo del cinema e delle comicità, che sarà in studio a raccontare “il suo Sanremo” in una chiave leggera.

“AmaSanremo” è un progetto realizzato in collaborazione con Rai RadioDue che trasmetterà l’evento e sarà presente in studio con uno dei suoi conduttori.

Solo alla fine di questo percorso si conosceranno i 10 finalisti dell’edizione di Sanremo Giovani, il contest, in onda in prima serata su Rai1 il 17 dicembre, che vedrà 10 “under 34” sfidarsi per conquistare la vittoria e aggiudicarsi 6 degli 8 posti disponibili (2 arriveranno da Area Sanremo) nella categoria Nuove proposte del Festival 2021.

Finale:La finale del concorso va in onda il 17 dicembre 2020 in diretta su Rai 1 dal Teatro del Casinò di Sanremo con la conduzione di Amadeus. I 10 concorrenti sono votati dalla Commissione musicale del Festival, da una giuria televisiva riunita per l’occasione e dal televoto. Vengono così decretati i 6 artisti che accedono alla sezione Nuove proposte del Festival di Sanremo 2020, insieme ai due finalisti di Area Sanremo.

Area Sanremo – edizione 2020: Anche quest’anno Area Sanremo 2020 apre le sue porte a centinaia di ragazzi pronti a calcare il palco del Festival della Canzone Italiana.
A causa dell’emergenza epidemiologica legata al Covid-19, l’edizione 2020  si svolgerà in modo da garantire il rispetto della normativa vigente in materia di contenimento e contrasto alla diffusione del virus.

Prima novità sarà la realizzazione dei corsi in modalità on line attraverso una piattaforma dedicata sul sito http://www.area-sanremo.it.

La fase delle audizioni, invece, sarà scaglionata nel corso del calendario prestabilito in modo da garantire la partecipazione a tutti gli iscritti evitando di creare assembramenti sia durante la fase di accreditamento che durante le audizioni stesse. Le audizioni live di Area Sanremo 2020 saranno nei giorni 24 e 25 ottobre, 31 ottobre e 1 novembre e 7 e 8 novembre. Condurranno alla finale del 21 e 22 novembre, quando verranno decretati gli 8 vincitori del concorso. Da questi ultimi, la commissione Rai sceglierà i 2 partecipanti alle Nuove Proposte del Festival di Sanremo 2021. Le audizioni si svolgeranno al Palafiori. Riconfermata la partnership con Nuovo Imaie e CPM Music Institute. Rai Radio Tutta Italiana è Media Partner del concorso.

La situazione di emergenza sanitaria ci obbliga a stabilire un numero massimo di domande, fissato per l’edizione 2020 a 600.

Ad ascoltare i brani sarà la commissione di valutazione musicale di Area Sanremo, composta dal Presidente Vittorio De Scalzi (compositore, musicista ed autore con oltre 50 anni di carriera alle spalle), Gianmaurizio Foderaro (storica voce dei microfoni Rai), Rossana Casale (nota corista), Enrico Mou (cantautrice) e G-Max (noto ai più per i successi con i Flaminio Maphia oltre che conduttore radiofonico ed attore).

Nomi importanti e dall’esperienza eterogenea dunque, che andranno a formare la Commissione che regalerà un sogno ai nuovi talenti canori. La Commissione dovrà valutare i ragazzi che si iscriveranno all’unico concorso che porterà due artisti sul palco dell’Ariston. Come detto, questi cantanti si aggiungono ai 61 ammessi di Sanremo Giovani 2020.

The international television service Rai Italia broadcast the competition in the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe. The contest was also streamed via the official Eurovision Song Contest website eurovision.tv.

Final: The 26 Big Artists each performed their entry again for a final time on 6 March 2021. A combination of public televoting (25%), press jury voting (25%), demoscopic jury voting (25%) and Sanremo Orchestra (25%) selected the top three to face a superfinal vote, then the winner of Sanremo 2021 was decided by a combination of public televoting (34%), demoscopic jury voting (33%) and press jury voting (33%). Måneskin were declared the winners of the contest with the song “Zitti e buoni”.

At Eurovision: The Eurovision Song Contest 2021 will take place at Rotterdam Ahoy in Rotterdam, Netherlands and consist of two semi-finals on 18 and 20 May and the final on 22 May 2021. According to Eurovision rules, all nations with the exceptions of the host country and the “Big 5” (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) are required to qualify from one of two semi-finals in order to compete for the final; the top ten countries from each semi-final progress to the final. As a member of the “Big 5”, Italy automatically qualifies to compete in the final. In addition to their participation in the final, Italy is also required to broadcast and vote in one of the two semi-finals.

The Netherlands will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, having internally selected Jeangu Macrooy as their representative with the song “Birth of a New Age”. He was due to compete in the 2020 contest with “Grow” before the event’s cancellation.

As the host country, the Netherlands will automatically qualify to compete in the final of the contest.

Background. Prior to the 2021 contest, the Netherlands had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest sixty times since their début as one of seven countries to take part in the inaugural contest in 1956. Since then, the country has won the contest five times: in 1957, 1959, 1969 as one of four countries to tie for first place, 1975, and finally in 2019. Following the introduction of semi-finals for the 2004 contest, the Netherlands had featured in seven finals. The Dutch least successful result has been last place, which they have achieved on five occasions, most recently in the second semi-final of the 2011 contest. The Netherlands has also received nul points on two occasions; in 1962 and 1963.

The Dutch national broadcaster, AVROTROS, broadcasts the event within the Netherlands and organises the selection process for the nation’s entry. The Netherlands has used various methods to select the Dutch entry in the past, such as the Nationaal Songfestival, a live televised national final to choose the performer, song or both to compete at Eurovision. However, internal selections have also been held on occasion. Since 2013, the broadcaster has internally selected the Dutch entry for the contest. In 2013, the internal selection of Anouk performing “Birds” managed to take the country to the final for the first time in eight years and placed ninth overall. In 2014, the internal selection of The Common Linnets performing the song “Calm After the Storm” qualified the nation to the final once again and placed second, making it the most successful Dutch result in the contest since their victory in 1975.

Before Eurovision.

Internal selection: On 18 March 2020, directly after the cancellation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, the national broadcaster, AVROTROS, announced its intent to again host the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, as well as that Macrooy would be kept as the nation’s representative for the event. The song, entitled “Birth of a New Age”, was released on 4 March 2021.

Spain will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, having internally selected Blas Cantó as their representative. He was due to compete in the 2020 contest with “Universo” before the event’s cancellation. Their competing entry, “Voy a quedarme”, was chosen during the national selection competition Destino Eurovisión 2021 organised by the Spanish broadcaster Televisión Española (TVE).

Background. Prior to the 2021 contest, Spain had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest fifty-nine times since its first entry in 1961. The nation has won the contest on two occasions: in 1968 with the song “La, la, la” performed by Massiel and in 1969 with the song “Vivo cantando” performed by Salomé, the latter having won in a four-way tie with France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Spain has also finished second four times, with Karina in 1971, Mocedades in 1973, Betty Missiego in 1979 and Anabel Conde in 1995. In 2019, Spain placed twenty-second out of twenty-six countries with the song “La venda” performed by Miki.

The Spanish national broadcaster, Televisión Española (TVE), broadcasts the event within Spain and organises the selection process for the nation’s entry. The Spanish broadcaster had used both national finals and internal selection to choose the Spanish entry in the past. For 2018 and 2019, TVE used the reality television singing competition Operación Triunfo (the Spanish version of Star Academy) to select the artist and song to represent Spain in the contest, as they had previously done from 2002 to 2004.

Before Eurovision.

Internal selection: On 18 March 2020, the day of the 2020 contest’s cancellation, TVE confirmed their intentions to participate at the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest. The broadcaster also announced that they would continue cooperation with Blas Cantó, their intended artist for 2020. On 29 December 2020, it was revealed that a national final would select the song Cantó would sing in Rotterdam.

Destino Eurovisión 2021: Destino Eurovisión 2021 was the national final organised by TVE that took place on 20 February 2021. The show was broadcast on La 1 as well as online via TVE’s official website rtve.es. Ten songs provided by composers who usually work with Cantó were shortlisted and a committee consisting of members of TVE, Warner Music Spain along with Cantó and his team selected two songs for the national final. The two competing songs “Memoria” and “Voy a quedarme” premiered on 10 February 2021 via TVE’s official website.

The televised final took place on 20 February 2021, produced at Prado del Rey Studio 5 in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid) and hosted by Tony Aguilar, Julia Varela and Víctor Escudero. All two participating songs were performed by Blas Cantó and the winning song was selected exclusively through a public vote via telephone, SMS and TVE’s official Eurovision app and website. In addition to the performances of the competing songs, guest performers included Vanesa Martín, Nia, Andrés Suárez, Cepeda, Roi, and former Eurovision contestants Pastora Soler and Edurne who represented Spain in 2012 and 2015, respectively.

Staging and performance. The staging director for the Spanish performance will be Marvin Dietmann, who had previously worked among others with the delegations of Austria, Bulgaria and Germany in a similar role, including the winning performance of Austria in the 2014 Contest. Blas Cantó will be joined on stage by backing singers Alba Gil, Héctor Artiles, Daira Monzón, Irene Alman and Dángelo Ortega.

The United Kingdom will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The British national broadcaster BBC internally selected James Newman to represent the country with the song “Embers”. Newman was due to compete in the 2020 contest with “My Last Breath” before the event’s cancellation.

Background. Prior to the 2021 contest, the United Kingdom participated in the Eurovision Song Contest sixty-two times. Thus far, the United Kingdom has won the contest five times: in 1967 with the song “Puppet on a String” performed by Sandie Shaw, in 1969 with the song “Boom Bang-a-Bang” performed by Lulu, in 1976 with the song “Save Your Kisses for Me” performed by Brotherhood of Man, in 1981 with the song “Making Your Mind Up” performed by Bucks Fizz and in 1997 with the song “Love Shine a Light” performed by Katrina and the Waves. To this point, the nation is noted for having finished as the runner-up in a record fifteen contests. Up to and including 1998, the UK had only twice finished outside the top 10, in 1978 and 1987. Since 1999, the year in which the rule was abandoned that songs must be performed in one of the official languages of the country participating, the UK has had less success, thus far only finishing within the top ten twice: in 2002 with the song “Come Back” performed by Jessica Garlick and in 2009 with the song “It’s My Time” performed by Jade Ewen. In 2018, the United Kingdom finished in 24th place with the song “Storm” performed by SuRie, amassing a total of 48 points. In 2019, Michael Rice with the song “Bigger Than Us” finished in 26th place (last) with 11 points, the fourth time in the nation’s history that it has finished in last place.

The British national broadcaster, the BBC, broadcasts the event within the United Kingdom and organises the selection process for the nation’s entry. Between 2011 and 2015, the BBC opted to internally select the British entry. For their 2016 entry, the broadcaster announced that a national final would be organised featuring a competition among several artists and songs to choose the British entry for the contest. The same process was used in 2017 and 2018, and changes were brought in for 2019. For 2020, the BBC opted to return to an internal selection, in collaboration with record label BMG.

Before Eurovision.

Internal selection: On 19 February 2021, BBC confirmed that James Newman will represent the United Kingdom in the 2021 contest. The BBC also announced the renewed collaboration between BBC Studios and record label BMG. The song, entitled “Embers”, was released on 11 March 2021.

In an interview on Newsbeat Newman stated “I feel like everyone wants a party and to have some fun so when I was writing, that’s what I had in my head. I wanted something people can dance to, even if it’s just in their kitchen”.
