  • 17 public service broadcasters will compete in the 22nd Junior Eurovision Song Contest
  • Highest number of participants since 2021 with Cyprus and San Marino returning to the competition
  • “Let’s Bloom” revealed as the creative concept for the show
  • Tickets go on sale on Tuesday 15 October

The EBU and Host Broadcaster RTVE are excited to confirm the 17 countries participating in the 22nd Junior Eurovision Song Contest (JESC) in Madrid on Saturday 16 November.

Albania (RTSH), Armenia (AMPTV), Cyprus (CyBC), Estonia (ERR), France (France Televisions), Georgia (GPB), Germany (KiKA/NDR), Ireland (TG4), Italy (RAI), Malta (PBS), Netherlands (AVROTROS), North Macedonia (MKRTV), Poland (TVP), Portugal (RTP), San Marino (SMRTV), Ukraine (Suspilne) will compete alongside hosts Spain (RTVE) at the Caja Mágica venue in the Spanish capital.

Cyprus return to the competition for the first time since 2017, having previously taken part in 9 editions and hosted the Contest in 2008.

San Marino make their return to Junior Eurovision after 9 years away and have participated in three Contests to date.

With 17 participating countries the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 will have the highest number of competing broadcasters since 2021.

“Let’s Bloom” has also been revealed as the slogan and artistic theme for the 22nd Junior Eurovision Song Contest, which references the blossoming of young artists at the event.

The same concept will be carried over to the ‘postcards’; the short videos that precede the performances of every country. Each artist will be able to combine the motto, Let’s Bloom with a concept related to JESC values: Bloom in harmony, Bloom in joy, Bloom in diversity, etc.

The concept of “blooming” will be transferred to the Caja Mágica stage through organic elements.

RTVE has designed a simple and at the same time modern set, with a central element that is groundbreaking and reminiscent of the verticality of the digital world with which young people live together: a large vertical LED screen that will dominate the stage as a core element.

Spain is staging the 22nd edition of the competition, which is open to young artists aged between 9 and 14-years-old performing new songs, 55 years after the Eurovision Song Contest took place in Madrid in 1969.

It also coincides with the 20th anniversary of María Isabel winning the 2nd Junior Eurovision Song Contest for Spain in 2004.

Last year’s winner was France’s Zoé Clauzure with “Coeur” (Heart), giving France their second consecutive win and its third overall – equaling the Contest record set by Georgia in 2016.

RTVE accepted the invitation to host after Sandra Valero’s second-place finish in Nice.

JESC 2024 will take place at Caja Mágica, one of the architectural landmarks of Madrid, which has the capacity to accommodate between 5,000 and 7,000 spectators.

Ticket sales for the live show on 16 November and dress rehearsal on 15 November will go on sale on Tuesday 15 October.

Spanish broadcaster RTVE has announced that the Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be held on Saturday 16 November at the Caja Mágica in Madrid.

RTVE has taken over the organisation of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest after winners of the 2023 Contest, France, handed the opportunity to another country. France had hosted Junior Eurovision twice in the past three years.

Spain accepted the invitation following Sandra Valero’s second-place finish at Nice 2023 with “Loviu”.

‘Let’s Bloom’ has been chosen as the slogan and theme for this year, which references the blossoming of young artists as they take the stage and perform at the event.

The presenter lineup features a performer who has hosted Benidorm Fest, a superstar of Spanish film and television, and a young singer who gave Spain a bronze-medal finish at Junior Eurovision.

Martin Österdahl, Executive Supervisor for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest said: “It’s our pleasure to be welcoming young and talented artists from 17 countries to Madrid in November for the 22nd Junior Eurovision Song Contest. We’re also thrilled to be welcoming back two countries, Cyprus and San Marino, to the competition. It has been a long time since Spain has hosted a Eurovision event and RTVE’s excitement to be staging this year’s Contest has been infectious! We are looking forward to a wonderful week ahead of us in November.”

Ana María Bordas, Original Content Director at RTVE and Executive Producer of JESC 2024 explains the idea behind the theme: “We have thought of a concept that, taking nature as an example, influences the idea of young artists flourishing towards a future where they can be themselves and express freely in a healthy, safe and diverse way. The aim is to walk with them in their growth and development. In short, to help them flourish and progress, by being themselves. The concept of flowers and blooming comes from nature itself, where there is so much diversity and in which everything is important, harmonious and beautiful.”

Marvin Dietmann, the artistic director for JESC 2024 explains more: “Our vision is rooted in the belief that diversity is the essence of beauty, much like a flourishing garden. In this creative journey, we embrace the idea that each artist, like a unique plant, contributes to the vibrant tapestry of our ‘garden of life’. Here, everyone has their place and together we grow into diverse shapes, colours and forms. We invite our audience to trust in our vision and the future of our artists, as we embark on this transformative experience together.”

17 countries will compete in Madrid at Junior Eurovision 2024. With 17 countries taking part, the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 will have the highest number of competing broadcasters since 2021.

Hosts for Junior Eurovision 2024: Ruth, Marc & Melani. Ruth Lorenzo, Marc Clotet and Melani García will be presenting the 22nd Junior Eurovision Song Contest in November.

On Thursday 12 September, Spanish broadcaster RTVE announced the names of the three hosts that will be guiding us through Junior Eurovision 2024, when it comes to us from the Caja Mágica in Madrid on Saturday 16 November.

The presenter lineup features a performer who has hosted Benidorm Fest, a superstar of Spanish film and television, and a young singer who gave Spain a bronze-medal finish at Junior Eurovision.

• Ruth LorenzoRuth Lorenzo will be a familiar face to Eurovision fans, with the Murcia-born artist having represented Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014. 10 years ago in Copenhagen, Ruth gave Spain a Top 10 finish at the Contest with her song Dancing In The Rain. Since then, her career in music has continued, with the singer also branching out into television hosting.

Amongst other shows, Ruth has hosted Spain’s Eurovision pre-selection Benidorm Fest. Ruth looks upon her next hosting role as a tremendous honour: “This is a responsibility like few others I have ever had as a presenter. I live it with the same enthusiasm, responsibility and fantasy as the young artists that will come to Madrid to share their music”.

• Marc Clotet. An award-winning actor, Marc Clotet has starred in a wide range of roles across film (La Voz Dormida, El Jugador De Ajedrez), television (Física o Química, Amar Es Para Siempre) and theatre (Amantes, Tengo Tantas Personalidades). Marc has also founded his own production company, in 2021. His very first series was co-produced with RTVE, titled Esto No Es Suecia. It was awarded honours at both the Cannes Series Festival and the Prix Europa Awards.

The actor is already looking forward to his new challenge at Madrid 2024: “Being able to host a show like this, in front of 30 million people, in English, and to follow and support the dream of so many girls and boys from all over Europe, makes me very happy”.

• Mélani García. Already a shining star in the Junior Eurovision world, Melani García represented Spain at the 2019 Contest, which was held in Gliwice, Poland. With her song Marte, Melani gave Spain a third-place finish with 212 points, and the young singer has since gone on to release more music, as well as work in theatre and television. In 2022, she was nominated as Best Spanish Artist at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. And one year before she gave Spain that medal finish at Junior Eurovision, Melani won the 2018 series of La Voz Kids.

Melani says of her upcoming hosting duties: “Being there and living the experience from another point of view is one of my dreams. I will take the stage as an artist but also as a Eurofan, and I will try to make sure that you enjoy the festival as much as I will”.

Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024. The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 was the 22nd edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE). The contest took place on 16 November 2024 at Caja Mágica in Madrid, Spain, marking the first time that the contest was held in the country. The contest was also the first since 2015 to be held on a Saturday.

Seventeen countries participated in the contest, with Cyprus and San Marino returning after six- and eight-year absences respectively, while the United Kingdom opted not to participate after doing so the previous year.

Georgia’s Andria Putkaradze was the winner of the contest with the song “To My Mom”. Portugal won the public vote and finished in second place, its best placing to date. Ukraine, France and Malta completed the top five.

Caja Mágica, host venue of the 2024 contest

1.Location. Unlike the Eurovision Song Contest, the winning broadcaster of the previous year’s Junior Eurovision Song Contest does not automatically receive the right to host the next edition. However, since 2011 (with the exceptions of 2012, 2015, and 2018) it has become customary for winners to take on hosting duties, and since 2019, the winning broadcaster has had the right of first refusal on hosting the following competition. In 2015, 2014 winner, Italian broadcaster RAI, was given this right but ultimately opted out of it.

On 27 November 2023, upon its victory in the 2023 contest on home soil, French broadcaster France Télévisions announced that talks would be conducted with the EBU regarding the hosting of the 2024 contest, as multiple countries had expressed interest in doing so and it did not want a “French monopoly on Junior Eurovision”, having already hosted the event twice in a three-year span; It ultimately opted not to host in 2024. Spanish broadcaster Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE), which had finished in second place in the 2023 contest, was announced as the host for 2024 on 14 February 2024, with the Caja Mágica in Madrid announced as the venue on 10 May 2024. This marked the first time that the contest has been held in the country.

Location of host city (in blue), bidding cities (in green), and cities that submitted a bid but later withdrew (in red): Valencia Valencia Barcelona Barcelona Málaga Málaga Madrid Madrid Granada Granada Zaragoza Zaragoza

1.1.Bidding phase and host city selection. Upon the confirmation of Spain as the host country for 2024, the Generalitat Valenciana announced that it would bid to host the contest in a city in the Valencian Community; since 2022, the autonomous community has hosted Benidorm Fest, the Spanish national final for the Eurovision Song Contest. The mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, expressed interest in hosting the event in the city, followed by the mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre. Madrid, Granada and Zaragoza also announced their readiness to host the competition. Ana María Bordas, head of the Spanish delegation for the contest, had said that the broadcaster had received several bids upon the host country announcement and that a decision would be taken within the following weeks. Valencia, Barcelona, Málaga, Granada and Zaragoza were reported to have submitted an official bid by mid-March 2024. Shortly after, however, Zaragoza announced its withdrawal due to the unavailability of the intended venue for an assessment visit. In mid-April, Barcelona was unofficially reported to be in the forefront of the selection process, with Palau Sant Jordi considered as the potential venue, but by the end of the month the city dropped out of the running due to the lack of an adequate venue available for late 2024.

RTVE and the EBU scheduled a press conference at Malmömässan in Malmö on 10 May 2024, during the adult contest, where the selected host city was revealed to be Madrid, with Caja Mágica as the selected venue.

2.Participating countries. On 3 September 2024, the EBU announced that 17 countries would participate in the 2024 contest. Cyprus returned to the contest after a six-year absence, while San Marino did so after an eight-year absence, despite originally confirming non-participation. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom opted not to participate after doing so the previous two years.

Prior to the contest, a digital compilation album featuring all the songs from the 2024 contest was put together by the European Broadcasting Union and released by Universal Music on 1 November 2024.

Production. On 3 September 2024, along with the list of participating countries, RTVE and the EBU revealed the theme art and slogan of the 2024 contest, “Let’s Bloom”, as well as the stage design. The theme art features the image of a blooming flower, which “references the blossoming of young artists”.

Ruth Lorenzo, Marc Clotet and Melani García were revealed on 12 September 2024 as the presenters of the show. Lorenzo had represented Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 and hosted Benidorm Fest 2024, while García had represented Spain in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019.

Contestants were featured in “postcard” video introductions, in which they perform activities interspersed with artificial intelligence (AI)-generated footage of themselves in various imaginary scenarios. The implementation of AI elements was met with criticism from fans and media outlets.

The presentation of the jury votes was additionally changed for 2024. As opposed to previous years in which the scoreboard was laid out vertically in descending order, the scoreboard this year was laid out horizontally, with each country having its position fixed according to the running order and a score bar to fill out points with. The presenters announced the number of points each country received according to the 1–10 scale; for example, each country is shown the amount of countries that have given it 1 point, 2 points, and so forth. The 12 points were still announced by a spokesperson appointed by each country, however, their segments were pre-recorded instead of being a live link. Executive producer Ana María Bordas [es] stated that this was due to the Saturday timeslot forcing the producers to cap the show at two hours, and also in order to avoid causing stress for the participants.

Albania is set to take part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Madrid, Spain, with “Vallëzoj” performed by Nikol Çabeli. The Albanian broadcaster Radio Televizioni Shqiptar (RTSH) organised the national final Junior Fest Albania 2024 in order to select the country’s entry for the 2024 contest.

Background. Prior to the 2024 contest, Albania had participated in the contest nine times since its first entry in the 2012 contest. Albania has never won the contest, with their best result being in 2015, when Mishela Rapo represented the country with “Dambaje”, placing 5th. The nation opted not to take part in the contest in 2013 and 2014, and in 2020 (due to the COVID-19 pandemic). In 2023, Viola Gjyzeli competed for Albania with the song “Bota ime“, which ended up in 8th place with 115 points; this marked the first top ten entry for Albania since 2015.

Before Junior Eurovision.

Junior Fest Albania 2024. Junior Fest Albania 2024 was the seventh edition of Junior Fest Albania, the national final format developed by RTSH to select Albanian entries for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. The submission process for interested artists aged between nine and fourteen and composers to submit their entries for the competition was open between 29 July 2024 and 31 August 2024. Eighteen finalists were selected by a jury panel composed of music industry professionals and announced on 3 September 2024, with one-minute snippets of the songs published on 12 September.

RTSH had announced their intention to apply changes to the format of the competition – which took place on 27 September 2024 at the RTSH Symphony Orchestra Hall in Tirana, hosted by Angelo Shkreli and Julian Hurdha, and broadcast on RTSH1, RTSH Muzikë and Radio Tirana 1 – stating it would take place under a “brand new formula, in the form of a spectacle”. Migena Kraja and Klodian Qafoku were appointed the artistic and musical director of the event, respectively. The slogan for the competition was “Ti lulëzo” (“You bloom”), inspired by the theme art and slogan of the 2024 contest.

The winner of the competition was determined by the combination of the votes by a five-member jury panel, with the final also seeing several acts receive special awards for their participation. These included the prize for best vocals to Eden Dani, the prize for best lyrics to Ami Kokurti and the Robert Radoja encouragement prize to Ema Deda. Nikol Çabeli, born in Ioannina, Greece and residing in Gjirokastër, Albania, was declared the winner with the song “Vallëzoj“. In addition to the competing entries, the guest performers included Mal Retkoceri (winner of Festivali i Këngës 62) with “Çmendur“, Eranda Libohova with “Marinela” and Viola Gjyzeli with “Bota ime“, after which a children’s choir also performed “Footloose” and the finalists performed a rendition of the common song. Retkoceri was also one of the members of the jury panel.

Preparation. In early October 2024, the producers behind “Vallëzoj” confirmed that it would undergo a revamp ahead of the contest; among them was Enis Mullaj, who had previously worked an analogous position on various past Eurovision entries for Albania, including 2019 and 2023, as well as the Junior Eurovision entry in 2023. It was released on 8 October, alongside an accompanying music video.

At Junior Eurovision. The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 is set to take place at Caja Mágica in Madrid, Spain on 16 November 2024. Albania will perform 3rd, following Estonia and preceding Armenia.

Voting. The same voting system that was introduced in the 2017 edition will be used, where the results will be determined by 50% online voting and 50% jury voting. Every country has a national jury that consists of three music industry professionals and two children aged between 10 and 15 who are citizens of the country they represent. The rankings of those jurors are combined to make an overall top ten.

The online voting consists of two phases. The first phase of the online voting will begin on 15 November 2024 when a recap of all the rehearsal performances is shown on the contest’s website Junioreurovision.tv before the viewers can vote. After this, voters will also have the option to watch longer one-minute clips from each participant’s rehearsal. This first round of voting will end on 16 November at 17:59 CET. The second phase of the online voting will take place during the live show and begin right after the last performance and will be open for 15 minutes. International viewers will be able vote for three songs. They will also be able to vote for their own country’s song. These votes will then be turned into points which will be determined by the percentage of votes received. For example, if a song receives 10% of the votes, it will receive 10% of the available points.

Armenia is set to take part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Madrid, Spain, with “Cosmic Friend” performed by Leo. The Armenian broadcaster Public Television of Armenia (AMPTV) internally selected the country’s entry for the contest.

Background. Prior to the 2024 contest, Armenia had participated in the contest sixteen times since its first entry in the 2007 contest. Since then, it had placed inside of the top three on ten occasions – more than any other country to have ever competed – and won the contest on two occasions: in 2010 with the song “Mama” performed by Vladimir Arzumanyan and in 2021 with “Qami Qami” performed by Maléna. The nation opted not to take part in the contest in 2020 (due to the martial law imposed on the country as a result of the then-ongoing Second Nagorno-Karabakh War); it was then set to be represented by the eventual 2021 winner, Maléna. In 2023, Yan Girls competed for Armenia with the song “Do It My Way”, which ended up in 3rd place out of 16 entries with 180 points.

Before Junior Eurovision. Upon confirming its participation in the 2024 contest, AMPTV declared it would internally select its entrant and entry, and opened a submission process for interested artists aged between nine and fourteen, lasting until 21 July 2024; the deadline was later extended to 28 July 2024.All submissions required participants to enter covers of two songs, with the Junior Eurovision entry to be written for the selected entrant at a later date. Upon closing the submission period, over 100 applications had been submitted.

Following two rounds of auditions, an expert focus group consisting of both local and international industry professionals and appointed by AMPTV (presented in the table below) determined the eventual representative for the country. On 28 September 2024, AMPTV announced that it had internally selected ten-year-old Leo Mkrtchyan, known mononymously as Leo, as the Armenian entrant for the 2024 contest.

At Junior Eurovision. The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 is set to take place at Caja Mágica in Madrid, Spain on 16 November 2024. Armenia will perform 4th, following Albania and preceding Cyprus.

International viewers will be able vote for three songs.[17] They will also be able to vote for their own country’s song. These votes will then be turned into points which will be determined by the percentage of votes received. For example, if a song receives 10% of the votes, it will receive 10% of the available points.

Cyprus is set to take part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Madrid, Spain, with “Crystal Waters” performed by Maria Pissarides. The Cypriot broadcaster Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) internally selected the country’s entry for the contest.

Background. Prior to the 2024 contest, Cyprus had participated in the contest nine times since its first entry in the inaugural 2003 contest. Cyprus has never won the contest, with their best results being in 2004, when Marios Tofi represented the country with “Oneira“, and in 2006, when Luis Panagiotou and Christina Christofi represented it with “Agoria koritsia“, both placing 8th. The nation opted not to take part in the contest in 2005 (due to an “internal issue” with the selected song, presumably stemming from allegations of plagiarism made against it), between 2010 and 2013, in 2015, and then again between 2018 and 2023. In 2017, Nicole Nicolaou competed for Cyprus with the song “I Wanna Be a Star”, which ended up in 16th (last) place with 45 points; this marked the first last place result for Cyprus.

Before Junior Eurovision. On 21 August 2024, CyBC announced it would return to the contest after a six-year absence, having internally selected Maria Pissarides – an eleven-year-old student of a performing arts school in the United Kingdom – to represent the country. Pissarides was selected following an evaluation of a proposal made by the production company Chandal Entertainment Ltd, which also subsequently announced auditions to select dancers who would join the singer on stage, and the spokesperson for the Cypriot jury at the final. The song, titled “Crystal Waters”, written by Armin Gilani, Sophia Patsalides and Pissarides herself, was presented to the public on 30 September during the breakfast television show Omorfi mera (“Beautiful day”) on RIK 1; a special listening session reserved for the press was previously held at the Event Hall of the CyBC Archive in Nicosia on 27 September.

At Junior Eurovision. The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 will take place at the Caja Mágica in Madrid, Spain on 16 November 2024. Cyprus will perform 5th, following Armenia and preceding France.

Pissarides’ performance at the contest will be staged by Layla Ellison. She will be accompanied on stage by four dancers, namely Adriana Markich, Andriana Polemiti, Ciara Economopoulos and Danae Petrou.

Voting. The same voting system that was introduced in the 2017 edition will be used, where the results will be determined by 50% online voting and 50% jury voting. Estonia is set to take part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Madrid, Spain, with “Tänavad” performed by Annabelle Ats. The Estonian national broadcaster Eesti Rahvusringhääling (ERR) organised the national final Tähtede lava in order to select the Estonian artist for the 2024 contest.

Background. Estonia debuted in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2023. ERR had previously broadcast the contest in 2003 and 2004, however cited financial reasons for Estonia’s absence from participation in the junior contest in the years running up to their debut appearance. Broadcasters from the Baltic countries, including Estonia, expressed interest in taking part in the 2016 contest, which never materialised. ERR internally selected Arhanna to represent the country in 2023, with her song “Hoiame kokku” also being internally selected and released at a later date. At the contest Arhanna finished 15th with 49 points.

ERR’s head of entertainment Karmel Killandi, while interviewing Arhanna, said that she “opened the door” for artists to “perform in front of this huge audience” in future years, suggesting that Estonia could take part in 2024. On 24 November 2023, ahead of the country’s debut in the contest, Estonian broadcaster ERR said that it would be looking into the possibilities of making the singing competition Tähtede lava [et] its national final for Junior Eurovision. This was confirmed the following 4 May, ahead of the final of Tähtede lava.

Before Junior Eurovision.

Tähtede lava 2024. ERR selected the Estonian representative with the biennial television program Tähtede lava [et] (transl. Star Stage); the 2022 series of the show was won by Arhanna, who also won in her younger category in 2019, which motivated her selection to represent the country on its debut appearance in 2023. The competition consisted of five shows and concluded with a winning artist on 5 May 2024. All shows were hosted by Jaagup Tuisk and Aaron Thor Härm, and directed by Kristo Veinberg.

Contest overview. The 2024 series of the competition commenced on 7 April, together with the selection show of the youngest age category, which consisted of singers aged between 3 and 7 years old, and continued the following week with the selection show of the middle age category of 8 to 10 year olds, being held on 14 April; the eldest age category for singers aged between 11 and 13 years old had a selection show held on 21 April, where the three artists with the most points from the jury qualified to the final directly and an additional wildcard finalist was chosen according to the public votes. The winners of the two younger age categories were revealed during a live show called the first final, held on 28 April, while the winner of the eldest category, as well as the Estonian representative in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, was selected on 5 May during the so-called second final.

Following a total of eight performances (two per each finalist: one solo performance and one featuring a well-known Estonian performer), the winner of the second final was determined by a combination of votes from the public and a six-member jury panel composed of Sirje Medell (singing and music teacher), Kadri Hunt (conductor, singing teacher), Robert Linna (musician), Ewert Sundja (musician, songwriter), Alice Aleksandridi (choreographer) and Maris Aljaste (organiser of Tallinna laste jazzifestival Kräsh). At the end of the show, 13 year-old Annabelle Ats was announced as the winner of Tähtede lava‘s eldest age category.

Germany is set to take part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Madrid, Spain, with “Save the Best for Us” performed by Bjarne. ARD consortium member Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) and children’s television channel Kika are responsible for the country’s participation in the contest, and selected the German entrant and song through a national final.

Background. Prior to the 2024 contest, Germany had participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest three times since its debut in 2020; before their first appearance, Germany was set to take part in 2003 and 2004, however withdrew from both editions before the contest was held. The country entered the competition twice before 2022, when it took a “creative break” due to partial travel warnings for host country Armenia issued by the Federal Foreign Office, however still broadcast the contest on Kika. Germany returned the following year, represented by Fia with the song “Ohne Worte“, and ended up in 9th place out of 16 entries with 107 points, marking its first entrance into the top ten and therefore its best result in the contest to date.

Children’s television channel Kika, a joint venture of the German national broadcasters ARD and ZDF, broadcasts the event within Germany and organises the selection of the nation’s entry in collaboration with the northern German broadcaster NDR, which had also been responsible for organising Germany’s participation at the adult contest since 1996.

Before Junior Eurovision.

National final. NDR and Kika confirmed their intention to participate in the 2024 contest on 15 May 2024, also revealing that that the selection process for the German entry would follow a similar format to 2023 and not feature a submission process for interested artists, as the organisers instead opted to scout for potential participants behind closed doors.

The German entry for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 was selected through a national final, as announced on 19 June 2024. The five participants were chosen in collaboration with the production company Bildergarten Entertainment and unveiled on 21 June, along with one-minute excerpts of the demo versions of their songs and presentation videos recorded in Hamburg; a voting platform was launched immediately afterwards where viewers from Germany, as well as neighbouring Austria and Switzerland, could cast their votes until 30 June. The winner was selected by a 50/50 combination of votes from an international jury and the online vote, with the latter taking precedence in the event of a tie, and announced on 1 July 2024.

Italy is set to take part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Madrid, Spain, with “Pigiama party” performed by Simone Grande. The Italian broadcaster Radiotelevisione italiana (RAI) internally selected the country’s entry for the contest.

Background. Prior to the 2024 contest, Italy had participated in the contest nine times since its first entry in the 2014 contest, winning the contest with its debut entry “Tu primo grande amore” performed by Vincenzo Cantiello, marking its only win to this point. The nation opted not to take part in the contest in 2020 (due to the COVID-19 pandemic). In 2022, Rai Gulp – which had previously been in charge of Italy’s participation in the contest – was replaced within the structures of RAI by the flagship channel Rai 1, citing a new division of schedules and a desire for such events to reach a wider audience; this led to a huge increase of viewers watching the show in Italy. In 2023, Melissa and Ranya competed for Italy with the song “Un mondo giusto“, which ended up in 11th place out of 16 entries with 81 points.

Before Junior Eurovision. During the final of the second season of The Voice Kids in December 2023, host Antonella Clerici revealed that one of the show’s twelve finalists would go on to represent Italy in the 2024 contest; this was misinterpreted by much of the local media as a confirmation of the show’s winner, Simone Grande from Rozzano near Milan, being selected to represent the nation, which had not been at that point confirmed by RAI. On 10 September 2024, RAI announced that it had internally selected the Italian entrant for the contest and that they would be revealed on 19 September. Grande (who was, at the time of his selection, a twelve-year-old) was eventually announced as the entrant with the song “Pigiama party“, which was written by Alex Uhlmann, Luca Mattioni and Pablo Meneguzzo and released on 27 September, alongside an accompanying music video.

At Junior Eurovision. The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 will take place at the Caja Mágica in Madrid, Spain on 16 November 2024. On 1 October 2024, during the heads of delegation meeting, Italy was drawn to open the event in position 1.

In Italy, the event will be aired on Rai 2 and RaiPlay, with commentary provided by Mario Acampa; Rai Kids will be responsible for the television production of the Italian broadcast.

Performance. Grande’s performance will be staged Claudio Santucci and choreographed by Manuela Saccardi, with the supervision of Laccio. RAI described the concept of the performance as “touching on the themes of the right to childhood, to play, to lightheartedness”.

Malta is set to take part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Madrid, Spain, with “Stilla ċkejkna” performed by Ramires Sciberras. The Maltese broadcaster Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) organised the national final Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in order to select the Maltese entry for the contest.

Background. Prior to the 2024 contest, Malta had participated in the contest nineteen times since its first entry in the inaugural 2003 contest. Since then, Malta has won the contest on two occasions: in 2013 with “The Start” performed by Gaia Cauchi, and in 2015 with “Not My Soul” performed by Destiny Chukunyere. The nation opted not to take part in the contest in 2011 and 2012. In 2023, Yulan competed for Malta with the song “Stronger”, which ended up in 10th place out of 16 entries with 94 points.

Before Junior Eurovision.

Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024. Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 was the national final format developed by PBS to select the Maltese entry for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024. The competition consisted of a final on 21 September 2024, coinciding with Malta’s Independence Day, held at the TVM Studios in Pietà, and hosted by Melanie Kelly, and broadcast on Television Malta (TVM) as well as on the broadcaster’s streaming platform tvmi.mt.

Competing entries. On 6 May 2024, PBS announced the MESC and MJESC Music Exchange Camp would be held between 17 and 23 June, dedicated to the creation of a total of 60 competing songs for the following two national selections. The camp dedicated to the creation of entries for the Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 featured ten artists aged between nine and fourteen.

On 12 July 2024, PBS published the rules of the competition, opening a window for interested artists aged between nine and fourteen and composers to submit their entries until 19 August 2024. Songwriters from any nationality were able to submit songs as long as the artist was Maltese or possessed Maltese citizenship. Artists were able to submit as many songs as they wish, however, they could only compete with one in the final. Yulan, who represented Malta in the 2023 contest, was ineligible to compete due to a rule that prevents the previous winner from entering the following year. A dedicated panel selected the finalist entries, which were announced on 26 August 2024, with one-minute snippets of the songs published on 5 September.

Final. The final took place on 21 September 2024. The winner was determined by a weighed combination of votes from a jury panel (80%) and a public televote (20%), with the former taking precedence in the event of a tie. In addition to the competing entries, Chanel Monseigneur, who represented Malta in the 2020 contest, Gaia Gambuzza, who represented Malta in the 2022 contest, and Yulan performed as the interval acts. Ramires Sciberras – a twelve-year-old singer of Cambodian descent, adopted by Maltese parents at a young age – was declared the winner with the song “Stilla ċkejkna“, which became the first Maltese entry to be performed entirely in the Maltese language.

The Netherlands is set to take part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Madrid, Spain, with “Music” performed by Stay Tuned. The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS organised the national final Junior Songfestival 2024 in order to select the Dutch entry for the contest.

Background. Prior to the 2024 contest, the Netherlands had participated in the contest twenty-one times since its first entry in the inaugural 2003 contest. Since then, the country has won the contest on one occasion in 2009 with the song “Click Clack” performed by Ralf Mackenbach. The Netherlands is the only country to have taken part in every edition of the contest. Since 2014, as the result of a merger between the AVRO – which had previously been in charge of the Netherlands’ participation in the contest – and TROS into the current AVROTROS, it is the latter who participates representing the Netherlands. In 2023, Sep & Jasmijn [nl] competed for the Netherlands with the song “Holding On to You”, which ended up in 7th place out of 16 entries with 122 points.

Before Junior Eurovision.

Junior Songfestival 2024. Junior Songfestival 2024 was the twenty-first edition of Junior Songfestival, the national final format developed by AVROTROS to select Dutch entries for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. The event was held on 21 September 2024 at the RTM Stage in Rotterdam, and was hosted by Matheu and Stefania. The show was broadcast on NPO Zapp via NPO 3, as well as on the broadcaster’s streaming platform NPO Start.

Format. The selection took place in four stages: the received applications were first assessed by an expert committee; 45 were selected to be performed at an audition round, exerpts of which were published to the competition’s official YouTube channel on 5 and 19 April, and 3 May 2024, where a jury selected twenty artists to advance to the academy; at the academy, the singers had the opportunity to work with vocal coaches and choreographers, after which the nine finalists were determined, who were later grouped into four acts, each of them having an original song written and assigned; at the final, which was held on 21 September 2024, the winner was determined by a combination of votes from an kids jury (traditionally made up of past Junior Songfestival participants), a professional jury (made up of industry professionals) and an online vote – each awarding sets of 8–10 and 12 points – with the latter taking precedence in the event of a tie.

Competing entries. The submission process for interested artists aged between nine and fourteen was open between 23 September 2023 and 31 January 2024. All submissions required participants to enter one cover song and a separate introduction video. An expert committee reviewed the received submissions and selected 45 of them (including 29 which qualified directly, announced on 12 February 2024, and 16 which advanced from the preselection – a second chance round, where an additional 48 artists who hadn’t advanced were invited to perform, after which some were invited for the audition, announced on 27 February 2024) to proceed to the audition round. Auditionee and eventual finalist Veronika had previously competed in the Ukrainian national final in 2021, placing third. The finalists were revealed on 31 May 2024, while the groupings were unveiled on 14 June. One-minute snippets of the songs published on 29 June 2024, with the songs released daily between 2 and 5 July 2024.

Poland is set to take part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Madrid, Spain, with “All Together” performed by Dominik Arim. The Polish broadcaster Telewizja Polska (TVP) is responsible for the country’s participation in the contest and will choose the Polish entry through the national selection Szansa na sukces.

Background. Prior to the 2024 contest, Poland had participated in the contest ten times. In 2003 and 2004, Poland finished in last place, and they decided not to participate from 2005 to 2015. The country returned in 2016. In both 2018 and 2019, Poland won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest with Roksana Węgiel and Viki Gabor respectively. In 2021, Sara James competed for Poland with the song “Somebody” which ended up in 2nd place, being 6 points short of winning the competition. In 2023, Maja Krzyżewska competed for Poland with the song “I Just Need a Friend”, which ended up in 6th place out of 16 entries with 124 points.

In light of the 2023 Polish public media crisis, head of the Polish delegation for the contest Marta Piekarska reportedly assured that as long as “TVP trusts her”, Poland would not withdraw from the Junior Eurovision Song Contest; she was later confirmed as a member of the contest’s steering group, therefore confirming her involvement with the delegation for another year. In January 2024, a tender announcement was made by TVP in liquidation for the organisation of two traditional editions of Szansa na sukces that year – a spring edition, serving as the selection method for a newcomer spot at the Opole Festival, as well as an autumn edition held in relation to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest – thereby confirming it as the national final for the sixth year running.

Before Junior Eurovision.

Szansa na sukces. TVP selected the Polish representative with the television program Szansa na sukces (Chance of Success); the same show has also been used for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest since 2019 and various times for the Eurovision Song Contest, directly or indirectly.[a] Artur Orzech accepted a preliminary invitation to host the format following the takeover of Polish public media in late 2023. Casting for the show took place on 26 May 2024 at the TVP Headquarters in Warsaw, from which 21 acts were selected to advance to the competition.

Shows.

Heats. The heats were recorded in early July 2024 and aired on 8, 15 and 22 September 2024. In each heat, seven semi-finalists performed cover versions of randomly drawn songs corresponding to the theme of the episode, and a two-member professional jury consisting of Viki Gabor – who won the 2019 contest for Poland – and Mietek Szcześniak – who represented Poland in the Eurovision Song Contest 1999 – in heat 1; Sara James – who represented Poland in the 2021 contest – and Luna – who represented Poland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 – in heat 2; and Cleo – who represented Poland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 alongside Donatan – and Maja Krzyżewska – who represented Poland in the 2023 contest – in heat 3 selected one finalist; TVP reserved the option to select wildcards among the non-qualifiers. The themes of the heats are “the latest hits” in heat 1, “Eurovision hits” in heat 2 and “casting songs” in heat 3.

Notes.

[a]^ The format has been involved at least thrice in the selection of the Polish representative in the Eurovision Song Contest. In 1995, the selection of Justyna to represent the country was partially motivated by her win in the first edition of Szansa na sukces; similarly, in 1996, Viola Brzezińska, who won the second edition, was initially selected to represent Poland, however she would be later replaced by Kasia Kowalska, while in 2020, a special edition of the format served as the selection method for the contest later that year.

Chloe DelaRosa regards herself as a ‘Cantista’ – a combination of the Spanish words ‘cantante’ (singer) and ‘artista’ (artist). Born in the town of Guareña in Badajoz, she began showcasing her talent aged just three by dancing at concerts put on by her father who is also a musician. She gained widespread recognition for posting music videos with her siblings, which caught the attention of artists like Camilo and Alejandro Sanz, and helped cultivate a fandom on TikTok. Despite being so young, Chloe is also a regular fixture at music festivals, performing alongside notable artists such as Flamenco-inspired pop duo Andy & Lucas.

Ukraine is set to take part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Madrid, Spain, with “Hear Me Now” performed by Artem Kotenko. The Ukrainian broadcaster Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine (Suspilne) selected its entry, originally titled “Dim“, through the national final Natsvidbir na Dytiache Yevrobachennia – 2024.

BackgroundPrior to the 2024 contest, Ukraine had participated in the contest eighteen times, without ever missing an edition since its debut appearance in 2006. The country came second in 2008 with the song “Matrosy” performed by Viktoria Petryk, which remained its best result until 2012, when Anastasiya Petryk – who happens to be Viktoria’s younger sister – represented the country with the song “Nebo” and won the contest. Ukraine has hosted the event twice, both times in its capital city, Kyiv: at the Palace of Sports in 2009  – the same venue that previously hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005 – and at the Palace “Ukraine” in 2013. In 2023, Anastasia Dymyd competed for Ukraine with the song “Kvitka“, which ended up in 5th place out of 16 entries with 128 points.

Before Junior Eurovision.

Natsvidbir na Dytiache Yevrobachennia – 2024. Natsvidbir na Dytiache Yevrobachennia – 2024 is the national final format developed by Suspilne in order to select Ukraine’s entry for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024. The competition consists of a final held on 22 September 2024, hosted by Anna Trincher, Anna Tulieva and Timur Miroshnychenko. The show was broadcast on Suspilne Kultura, as well as on Suspilne‘s online platforms. The slogan for the competition was “Mrii smilyvo!” (“Dream boldly!”).

Format. The selection of the competing entries for the national final took place over three stages. In the first stage, artists could apply for the competition through an online submission form. For the second year in a row, Svitlana Tarabarova was the music producer of the event, who was in charge of reviewing the received submissions and selecting a longlist of 15 participants, announced on 24 July 2024. In the second stage, longlisted artists were assessed by a three-member expert council consisting of Michelle Andrade, Tayanna and Yevhen Khmara alongside competition producers Tarabarova, Yevhen Kot and Yevhen Triplov at an event labeled as the “star school”, with ten acts, announced on 2 September 2024, proceeding to the top ten stage of the competition, and eventually six acts, announced on 8 September, directly qualifying for the final. The third stage consisted of Tarabarova and Triplov – the head songwriters of the competition – writing and assigning six original songs for the finalists; no original song submitted by a competing artist made the final. The six selected artists will take part in a final on 22 September 2024, where the winner will be determined by a 50/50 combination of jury and public votes – the latter being cast through the Diia application over two phases of voting.

The preparations for the final were documented via the show Shchodennyky Dytiachoho Yevrobachennia (“Junior Eurovision Diaries”), consisting of six broadcasts hosted by Miroshnychenko and Tulieva and aired weekly on Suspilne Kultura between 16 August and 22 September 2024.

Competing entries. The submission process for interested artists aged between nine and fourteen was open between 5 June and 3 July 2024.[20] All submissions required participants to enter covers of two songs and a separate introduction video; however, artists were also allowed to submit original songs for consideration. Precedence was not given to complete submissions, with Suspilne also reserving the right to replace a song submitted by an eventual finalist with a new entry of its choice if such a case occurs. At the closing of the submission process, 309 applications had been received, with roughly 19% of them also including an original song. The songs were released on the official Eurovision Ukraine on 16 September.

At Junior Eurovision. The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 is set to take place at Caja Mágica in Madrid, Spain on 16 November 2024. Ukraine will perform 14th, following San Marino and preceding Portugal.
