Palais Nikaia, host venue of the 2023 contest.
Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023. The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 was the 21st edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster France Télévisions. The contest took place on 26 November 2023 at the Palais Nikaïa in Nice, France, following the country’s victory at the 2022 contest with the song “Oh maman!” by Lissandro. This was the second time that France hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, the first being in Paris in 2021.
Sixteen countries participated in the contest, with Estonia participating for the first time and Germany returning after its absence from the previous edition, while Kazakhstan and Serbia did not take part. This was also the first time that all members of the “Big Five” from the Eurovision Song Contest took part in the junior contest together.
France’s Zoé Clauzure was the winner of the contest with the song “Cœur“, making France the second country to win the Junior Eurovision Song Contest two years in a row and on home soil, after Poland. The result also marked France equaling Georgia’s record for the most Junior Eurovision victories. Spain, Armenia, the United Kingdom and Ukraine completed the top five. Germany received its best result to date and Albania its second-best result, while Georgia tied its worst placing and Ireland placed last for the first time.

1.Location. The contest took place at the Palais Nikaïa in Nice, a multi-purpose concert hall, following the country’s victory at the 2022 contest with the song “Oh maman!” by Lissandro. This was the second time that France hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, the first being in Paris in 2021.
1.1.Bidding phase and host city selection. UUnlike in the Eurovision Song Contest, the winning country did not receive the automatic rights to host the next contest. However, since 2019, each contest has been hosted by the previous year’s winning country, and since 2011 (with the exceptions of 2012 and 2018), the winning country has had the right of first refusal on hosting the following competition. In 2015, Italy was given the option to host but ultimately opted out of it.
Following France’s win in 2022, French head of delegation Alexandra Redde-Amiel and Director General of France Télévisions Delphine Ernotte revealed that the country wishes to host the contest in 2023. On 3 April 2023, the EBU and France Télévisions announced that the contest would be held in Nice.
2.Participating countries. On 29 August 2023, the EBU announced that 16 countries will participate in the contest, with Estonia making its debut and Germany returning after a one-year absence, while Kazakhstan and Serbia will not take part.
Prior to the contest, a digital compilation album featuring all the songs from the 2023 contest was put together by the European Broadcasting Union and released by Universal Music on 3 November 2023.

2.1.Other countries. For a country to be eligible for potential participation in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, with the exception of Australia and Kazakhstan, it needs to be an active member of the EBU. Prior to the announcement of the list of participants by the EBU, active EBU member broadcasters in Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium (VRT and RTBF), Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Moldova, Norway, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland, as well as associate members in Australia and Kazakhstan, confirmed they would not participate in the event.

3.Production / Format.A new child safety protocol focused on the well-being of the participants was implemented for the 2023 contest. According to the Spanish head of delegation Ana María Bordas, it seeked to offer transparency in the competition, and to bring especially Nordic countries, who were critical of child safety in the contest, back to the event
3.1.Visual design. The 2023 contest was the first edition of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest to incorporate the modern Eurovision heart, which has been used in the adult contest since 2015, in its generic logo. The update was revealed during the host city announcement on 3 April 2023.
During a European Broadcasting Union press conference on 10 May 2023 in Liverpool, where the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 was taking place, Alexandra Redde-Amiel, head of the French Eurovision delegation, announced the slogan of the contest, “Heroes”. The accompanying theme art was unveiled on 29 August, which featured a street art look based on splashes of paint, chalk, powder and fireworks that “brings modernity and speaks to all generations”. The stage design, unveiled on 27 September, featured a 12-metre high LED screen in the shape of wings, “reflecting the desire to fly away, create and imagine”.
3.2.Presenters. Laury Thilleman, Olivier Minne, and Ophenya were the presenters of the show; Minne had previously co-hosted the 2021 contest. Ophenya, a French influencer, additionally acted as a “digital ambassador”, creating content for Junior Eurovision’s social media channels.
The opening ceremony event, which was held on 20 November at Hotel Negresco, was hosted by Carla Lazzari, France’s representative at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019, and Manon Théodet. During the ceremony, each delegation was welcomed by Laura Tenoudji and Ophenya, and the draw was carried out, according to tradition. In this ceremony, the draw took place which determined the position of the host country (France) and which country will open and close the show. The ceremony also saw French Junior Eurovision representatives, since the country’s return to the contest in 2018, perform excerpts of their entries.
Postcards. Contestants were featured in “postcard” video introductions, set in different locations in Nice. Each postcard began with a child participating in an activity of their choice and facing a setback that discourages them, before the upcoming performer, standing on top of a building, empowered them to accomplish their task. At the end of each postcard, the children participating in the aforementioned activity creatively recreated the flag of the upcoming performer’s representative country, after which it transitioned to the stage.

Background. France debuted in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2004 with “Si on voulait bien” by Thomas Pontier. Despite getting sixth place, France Télévisions decided to withdraw from the contest after 2004, saying there was no motivation to compete and that “too much Eurovision kills Eurovision”. France returned to the contest in 2018, and achieved second place with Angelina with the song “Jamais sans toi“. In the 2020 contest, Valentina represented France in Warsaw, Poland with the song “J’imagine“. She placed 1st out of 12 entries with 200 points, achieving the first ever French victory at the contest and the first win for France in any Eurovision event since Eurovision Young Dancers 1989.[4] After a top 3 placement in 2021, France claimed its second victory in the 2022 contest thanks to Lissandro, who sang “Oh maman!”. He won the jury voting and gained a total of 203 points, bringing Junior Eurovision back to France for a second hosting.
Before Junior Eurovision. On 27 Septemher 2023, Zoé Clauzure was announced as the French entrant at Junior Eurovision 2023 with the song “Cœur” (Heart).
At Junior Eurovision.
• 🇬🇪 Georgia: Anastasia & Ranina (Anastasia Vasadze, Nikoloz Kharati and Oto Bazerashvili) – “Over The Sky” (Mebo Nutsubidze – Mebo Nutsubidze / Betkho). Georgian Ι English. Anastasia Vasadze won Georgia’s young talent contest ‘Ranina 2023’ and the chance to represent her country at Junior Eurovision in Nice. She’ll be joined on stage by her fellow finalists from that competition Nikoloz Kharati and Oto Bazerashvili, who will perform as ‘Ranina’. Anastasia has a glittering trophy cabinet, having won the international singing competition Wonderland in 2018 and the Golden Muse contest in 2021 – so she’ll be hoping to add a fourth Junior Eurovision victory for Georgia to her accomplishments. Both Nikoloz and Oto have tasted success in numerous talent contests too, so it looks like Georgia are sending a ‘triple threat’ to France this year.

Georgia will compete in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in France, which will be held in Nice on 26 November 2023. The children’s talent show Ranina was used for the sixth year in a row to select Georgia’s representative, Anastasia Vasadze. Later, it was revealed that she would be joined by Nikoloz Kharati and Oto Bazerashvlili. The trio will represent Georgia with the song “Over the Sky”.
Background. Prior to the 2023 contest, Georgia had participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest fifteen times since its debut in 2007, and since then they have never missed a single contest. Georgia is also the most successful country in the competition, with three victories in 2008, 2011 and 2016. In the 2022 contest, Mariam Bigvava represented Georgia with the song “I Believe” following her victory in the fifth season of Ranina, achieving 3rd place out of 16 with 161 points.
Before Junior Eurovision.
Ranina (რანინა). For the sixth year in a row, Georgia used an original children’s talent show format, Ranina (Georgian: რანინა), as the selection method for their artist. Georgian broadcaster GPB confirmed that Ranina would be used for the sixth time in December 2022. The list of participants competing in the show was revealed on 1 February 2023, confirming that the show would once again have 10 competitors. On March 29, GPB announced that Ranina’s first episode will be aired on April 1.
Classical pianist David Aladashvili remained as the main host of the show. Last years finalist Vache Ghviniashvili joined him as co-host.

Preparation. Despite Anastasia Vasadze being the sole winner of Ranina 2023, therefore winning the right to represent Georgia in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, it was revealed on 12 September 2023 that she would be supported on stage by Nikoloz Kharati and Oto Bazerashvili, both of whom participated in the 2022 edition of the selection and reached the final. This also marked the first time that Georgia would not be represented by a soloist since 2015.
The trio went on to rebrand to Anastasia and Ranina, referencing the name of the selection show which brought them together, on 13 October, with their song “Over the Sky”, written by Betkho and Mebo Nutsubidze, being released on 15 October during the broadcast of Am shabat-k’viras (Georgian: Ამ შაბათ-კვირას, transl. This Weekend) on the First Channel.

Germany is set to compete in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in France, which will be held on 26 November 2023 in Nice. National television station KiKa is responsible for the participation and selected the nation’s entrant via national selection, won by Fia with the song “Ohne Worte”.
Background. Germany announced on 8 July 2020 that it would debut in the 2020 contest held in Warsaw, Poland. Children’s station KiKa, a joint venture of the German national broadcasters ARD and ZDF, broadcasts the event within Germany and organises the selection of the nation’s entry. Their most recent entry before the 2023 contest was Pauline and her song “Imagine Us”, who placed 17th with 61 points in the 2021 contest.
In 2022, the country chose not to participate and instead took a “creative break” due to partial travel warnings for host country Armenia issued by the Federal Foreign Office. KiKa still broadcast the show and expressed interest in returning to the 2023 competition.
Before Junior Eurovision. The German television announced on 25 May 2023 that they would select the German representative internally for the first time. However, in early August it was reported that more details regarding the country’s participation would be revealed at the end of the month, and on 23 August it was revealed that a national final with 5 acts approached by the public broadcaster NDR would be held in September to select the German act for the contest instead.
National final. The participants and one-minute excerpts of the demo versions of their songs were revealed on 8 September with a voting platform launching immediately afterwards, where viewers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland can cast their votes until 17 September. Following the combination of the results of the online voting (50%) and an international expert jury (50%), German child singer of Chinese descent Fia was announced as the winner of the selection on 18 September. The international jury consisted of Kelvin Jones, Tom Gregory and Christopher, as well as other unnamed members from France, Germany, Poland, Portugal and the United Kingdom.
The full version of “Ohne Worte”, recorded following the national final, was released on 13 October, together with an accompanying music video.

Before Junior Eurovision.
Szansa na Sukces. Eurowizja Junior 2023. TVP selected the Polish representative with the television program Szansa na sukces (transl. Chance of Success); the same show was also used for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest since 2019, and various times for the Eurovision Song Contest. The competition consisted of four shows which concluded with a winning artist and competing song reveal on 24 September 2023. The shows were broadcast on TVP2, as well as online via the platform TVP VOD and at the broadcaster’s website tvp.pl, hosted by Aleksander Sikora [pl], who hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2019.
Format. The casting for the show took place on 13 and 14 May, from which twenty-one acts were selected to advance to the competition. The format of the national final consisted of four shows: three pre-recorded heats with seven contestants each broadcast on 3, 10 and 17 September 2023, respectively, and a final broadcast live on 24 September 2023. In each heat, the contestants performed cover versions of randomly drawn songs and a three-member professional jury consisting of Marek Sierocki (Polish commentator of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest) and 2 unique members for each episode selected the winner of the episode which qualifies to the final and a runner-up which receives a honourable mention, but does not advance to the final. TVP reserved the right to select up to two wildcard contestants to advance to the final as well, with those contestants being given the Golden Ticket in the broadcast of the heat they competed in. The final featured the remaining contestants again performing cover versions of randomly drawn songs that were already performed during the heats, after which the 50/50 combination of votes from a three-member professional jury and a public vote decided the 2 superfinalists. The superfinalists then performed their renditions of the internally selected Polish entry, after which the winner was selected solely by public vote.

• 🇬🇧United Kingdom: STAND UNIQU3 – “Back to Life“ (Sky Adams / Jakke Erixson / Jack Hawitt – Sky Adams / Jakke Erixson / Jack Hawitt). English. STAND UNIQU3 is the first group to represent the United Kingdom at Junior Eurovision, and features the talented trio Hayla, Maisie, and Yazmin. Hayla, from Liverpool, plays as a striker in football and when she’s not playing, follows her favourite team, Liverpool F.C. Her ideal day would involve eating chocolate, watching movies, and spending time with her two brothers (when they’re not annoying her!). Maisie loves to chill at home in Essex. Her party trick involves twisting her arm all the way around – but don’t worry, she’s just got a double jointed elbow! If she could only eat one thing for the rest of her life it would be chips…“110%”. From Newcastle, keen latin and ballroom dancer Yazmin’s favourite place in the world is the dance academy she goes to for lessons. She also loves cuddling up with her attention-seeking chihuahua, ‘Tinkerbell’, writing stories, and shopping (Yazmin collects designer carrier bags).
