France participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy, with “Fulenn” (Étincelle ou Jeune Fille) performed by Alvan and Ahez. The French broadcaster France Télévisions organised the national final Eurovision France, c’est vous qui décidez ! in order to select the French entry for the 2022 contest. Twelve songs competed in the national final on 5 March 2022, where the winner was selected over two rounds of voting.
Background: Prior to the 2022 contest, France has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest sixty-three times since its debut as one of seven countries to take part in the inaugural contest. France first won the contest in 1958 with “Dors, mon amour” performed by André Claveau. In the 1960s, they won three times, with “Tom Pillibi” performed by Jacqueline Boyer in 1960, “Un premier amour” performed by Isabelle Aubret in 1962 and “Un jour, un enfant” performed by Frida Boccara, who won in 1969 in a four-way tie with the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. France’s fifth victory came in 1977, when Marie Myriam won with the song “L’oiseau et l’enfant“. France has also finished second five times, with Paule Desjardins in 1957, Catherine Ferry in 1976, Joëlle Ursull in 1990, Amina in 1991 (who lost out to Sweden’s Carola in a tie-break), and Barbara Pravi in 2021. In the 21st century, France has had less success, only making the top ten five times, with Natasha St-Pier finishing fourth in 2001, Sandrine François finishing fifth in 2002, Patricia Kaas finishing eighth in 2009, Amir finishing sixth in 2016, and Pravi finishing second in 2021 with 499 points.
The French national broadcaster, France Télévisions, broadcasts the event within the country and delegates the selection of the nation’s entry to the television channel France 2. The French broadcaster has used both national finals and internal selection to choose the national entry in the past. The 2018 and 2019 French entries were selected via the national final Destination Eurovision, while in 2021, the new format Eurovision France, c’est vous qui décidez ! was used as the national selection.
Before Eurovision:
Eurovision France, c’est vous qui décidez !: Eurovision France, c’est vous qui décidez ! (“Eurovision France, it’s you who decide!”) was the national final organised by France 2 to select France’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. The competition took place on 5 March 2022 at the France Télévisions studios in Saint-Denis, hosted by Stéphane Bern and Laurence Boccolini. The show was broadcast on France 2, TV5Monde and TV5 Québec Canada on a time delay as well as online via France Télévisions and TV5Monde’s official websites france.tv and europe.tv5monde.com, respectively. The national final was watched by 1.47 million viewers in France with a market share of 8.8%.
Format: The format of the national final consists of a live final on 5 March 2022 where the winner was selected over two rounds of voting. Twelve entries competed in the first round, from which five was selected exclusively by public televoting to advance to the second round, the superfinal. A ten-member Francophone and international jury panel then selected a wildcard entry from the remaining seven entries to proceed to the superfinal. In the superfinal, the winner was determined by the combination of public televoting (50%) and the ten-member jury panel (50%). The public and the juries each had a total of 420 points to award, with each jury member awarding 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 points to their top six entries. Viewers were able to vote via telephone and SMS voting which also accepted international votes, with the public vote awarding 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 points to their top six songs.
The jury panel consisted of:
- Jenifer (jury president) – singer and actress
- Gjon’s Tears – singer-songwriter, represented Switzerland in 2021
- Nicoletta – singer
- Cyril Féraud – television presenter
- Yseult – singer-songwriter and model
- Agustín Galiana – Spanish singer and comedian
- Élodie Gossuin – television presenter, co-host of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021
- André Manoukian – jazz singer and former judge on Nouvelle Star
- Joyce Jonathan – singer-songwriter
- Sundy Jules – YouTube personality
Competing entries: France 2 opened a submission period on 21 June 2021 in order for interested artists and songwriters to submit their proposals through an online submission form up until the deadline on 24 October 2021. Songs were required to contain at least 70% French language or French regional language lyrics with a free language allowance for the remaining lyrics. At the closing of the deadline, the French broadcaster received 3,000 submissions. Auditions which featured entries shortlisted from the received submissions took place starting on 6 January 2022 at the Apollo Theatre in Paris, and the twelve entries selected to compete in the national final were announced on 16 February 2022.
Final: The final took place on 5 March 2022. Twelve entries competed and the winner was selected over two rounds of voting. In the first round, the top five entries as determined exclusively by public televoting advanced to the second round, the superfinal. “Ma famille” performed by Cyprien Zeni was awarded the wildcard by a Francophone and international ten-member jury panel from the remaining seven entries to proceed to the superfinal. Immediately after the artists concluded their performances, a number was shown which denoted the amount of jury members who liked the song, however the results were symbolic and did not affect the voting. In the superfinal, the winner, “Fulenn” performed by Alvan and Ahez, was determined by the combination of public televoting and the ten-member jury.
In addition to performing their contest entry, the twelve artists performed the song “Imagine” by John Lennon in support of the Ukrainian people affected by the Russian invasion of the country, preceded by a message from Ukrainian Eurovision Song Contest 2016 winner Jamala. Barbara Pravi, who represented France in the 2021 Contest, performed her song “Voilà” as the interval act of the show.

Germany participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy with the song “Rockstars” performed by Malik Harris. The German entry for the 2022 contest was selected through the national final Germany 12 Points, organised by the German broadcaster ARD in collaboration with Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). The national final took place on 4 March 2022 and featured six competing acts with the winner being selected through online radio voting and public voting.
Background: Prior to the 2022 contest, Germany has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest sixty-four times since its debut as one of seven countries to take part in 1956. Germany has won the contest on two occasions: in 1982 with the song “Ein bißchen Frieden” performed by Nicole and in 2010 with the song “Satellite” performed by Lena. Germany, to this point, has been noted for having competed in the contest more than any other country; they have competed in every contest since the first edition in 1956 except for the 1996 contest when the nation was eliminated in a pre-contest elimination round. In 2021, the German entry “I Don’t Feel Hate” performed by Jendrik placed twenty-fifth out of twenty-six competing songs scoring 3 points.
The German national broadcaster, ARD, broadcasts the event within Germany and delegates the selection of the nation’s entry to the regional broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR). NDR confirmed that Germany would participate in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest on 19 March 2021. Between 2013 and 2019, NDR set up national finals with several artists to choose both the song and performer to compete at Eurovision for Germany, while an internal selection was organised in 2020 and 2021. On 3 November 2021, the broadcaster announced that they would organise a multi-artist national final to select the German entry.
Before Eurovision:
Germany 12 Points: Germany 12 Points was the competition that selected Germany’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. The competition took place on 4 March 2022 at the Studio Berlin Adlershof in Berlin, hosted by Barbara Schöneberger. The show was broadcast on Das Erste and One as well as via radio on the nine ARD radio channels and online via the broadcaster’s Eurovision Song Contest website eurovision.de. The national final was watched by 3.25 million viewers in Germany.
Competing entries: Interested artists and composers were able to submit their entries for the competition between 4 November 2021 and 30 November 2021. By the end of the process, it was announced that 944 submissions were received by NDR and 25 entries were shortlisted. The six competing entries were selected during a final casting round held in Berlin in January 2022 by a seven-member panel consisting of Alexandra Wolfslast (head of German delegation for Eurovision), Meike Nett (NDR 2 head of music), Holger Lachmann (Antenne Brandenburg head of music), Edi van Beek (Bayern 3 head of music), Gregor Friedel (SWR3 music director), Andreas Loeffler (WDR 2, WDR 4 and 1LIVE head of music) and Alexander Schmitz (MDR Jump music director). The six participating acts were announced during a press conference on 10 February 2022.

Final: The televised final took place on 4 March 2022. The running order for the participating entries was determined on 23 February 2022 during the show Live nach Neun on Das Erste, hosted by Alina Stiegler and Peter Großmann. The winner, “Rockstars” performed by Malik Harris, was selected through a 50/50 combination of votes from radio voting and public voting, the latter which included options for landline and SMS voting.[1] For the radio vote, listeners were able to vote via the official websites of the nine ARD radio channels between 28 February 2022 and 4 March 2022. In addition to the performances of the competing entries, 2016 Ukrainian Eurovision winner Jamala performed her winning song “1944”, while 2014 Austrian Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst performed a medley of Eurovision entries together with 1973 German Eurovision entrant Gitte Hænning and member of 2006 German Eurovision entrant Texas Lightning, Jane Comerford.

Italy hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, having won the previous edition with “Zitti e buoni” by Måneskin. Italian broadcaster RAI announced that the winning performer(s) of the Sanremo Music Festival 2022, later turning out to be Mahmood and Blanco with “Brividi“, would earn the right to represent the nation at the contest. As both the host country and a member of the “Big Five”, Italy automatically qualified to the final.
Background: Prior to the 2022 contest, Italy has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest forty-six times since its first entry at the inaugural contest in 1956. Since then, Italy has won the contest on three occasions: in 1964 with the song “Non ho l’età” performed by Gigliola Cinquetti, in 1990 with “Insieme: 1992” by Toto Cutugno, and in 2021 with “Zitti e buoni” by Måneskin. Italy has withdrawn from the Eurovision Song Contest a number of times, with their most recent absence spanning from 1998 until 2010. Italy made its return in 2011, and their entry “Madness of Love”, performed by Raphael Gualazzi, placed second—their highest result, to that point, since their victory in 1990. A number of top 10 placements followed in the next editions, culminating with their victory in 2021.
Between 2011 and 2013 and since 2015, the Sanremo Music Festival has regularly been used to select the Italian entrant to the contest, at first through an intermediate stage of internal selection among the contestants, and after 2014 (when a fully internal selection took place), the winner of the festival has always earned the right of first refusal to represent Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Before Eurovision: The Sanremo Music Festival 2022 (Italian: 72º Festival della Canzone Italiana di Sanremo 2022) was the 72nd edition of the annual Sanremo Music Festival, a television song contest held in the Teatro Ariston of Sanremo, organised and broadcast by RAI. The show was held between 1 and 5 February 2022, and was presented for the third time in a row by Amadeus, who also served as the artistic director for the competition, alongside a number of co-hosts. It was won by Mahmood and Blanco with “Brividi“.
Artist selection: Italian broadcaster RAI confirmed that the performer that would represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 would be selected from the competing artists at the Sanremo Music Festival 2022, the 72nd edition of the event. According to the rules of Sanremo 2022, the winner of the festival earns the right to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest, but in case the artist is not available or refuses the offer, the organisers of the event reserve the right to choose another participant via their own criteria. The competition took place between 1 and 5 February 2022 with the winner being selected on the last day of the festival.
For the third year in a row, Amadeus served as the artistic director and presenter of Sanremo, and was joined on stage by Ornella Muti, Lorena Cesarini, Drusilla Foer, Maria Chiara Giannetta and Sabrina Ferilli, each on a different night. 25 artists, three of which directly qualifying from the newcomers’ section Sanremo Giovani (held on 15 December 2021), competed in the festival. This took place over the course of five consecutive nights, articulated as follows:
- On each of the first two nights, half of the entrants performed their songs, and were judged by three separate panels from a jury of journalists.
- On the third night, all of the songs were performed and voted through a 50/50 split system by means of televoting and a demoscopic jury. The results were combined with those of the previous nights.
- On the fourth night, the contestants each performed a cover of a song, and were voted by the same system used on the first three nights.
- On the last night, the 25 entries were once again performed, going through televoting alone, to be added up to the results obtained that far; ultimately, a final voting round (again a sum of televoting and the two juries) was held among the top 3, which determined the winner.
The first 22 competing artists were announced on 4 December 2021. Six former Eurovision Song Contest entrants were among the competing artists: Iva Zanicchi (1969), Gianni Morandi (1970), Massimo Ranieri (1971 and 1973), Emma (2014), Fabrizio Moro (2018) and Mahmood (2019). On 15 December, the three artists qualifying from the Sanremo Giovani section were announced, alongside the titles of all 25 competing songs. Entrant Achille Lauro would later be selected in the Sammarinese national final on 19 February 2022.

The 2022 edition of the Sanremo Music Festival will take place at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo, Liguria, organized by the Italian public broadcaster RAI. The artistic director and the presenter for the competition is Amadeus, for the third consecutive year.
Format: The 2022 edition of the Sanremo Music Festival took place at the Teatro Ariston in Sanremo, Liguria, organized by the Italian public broadcaster RAI. The artistic director and the presenter for the competition was Amadeus, for the third consecutive year.
The venue returned to its full capacity during the festival, after the presence of an audience was not allowed in the previous edition due to the COVID-19 pandemic
Presenters: In August 2021, RAI officially confirmed Amadeus as the presenter of the 72nd edition of the Sanremo Music Festival. Together with Amadeus, five co-hosts alternated during the five evenings: Ornella Muti, Lorena Cesarini, Drusilla Foer, Maria Chiara Giannetta and Sabrina Ferilli.
Besides these, Orietta Berti and Fabio Rovazzi hosted parts of the show (for sponsorship reasons) from the cruise ship Costa Toscana off the shore of Sanremo.
Voting: Voting will occur through the combination of three methods:
- Public televoting, carried out via landline, mobile phone, the contest’s official mobile app, and online voting.
- Jury of the Press Room, TV, Radio and Web.
- Demoscopic jury, composed by 1000 music fans who will vote from their homes via an electronic voting system managed by Ipsos.
Their voting will be articulated as follows:
- First two nights: 12 entrants will be judged by three separate panels from the jury of journalists.
- Third night: all of the entrants will be judged through a 50/50 split system by means of televoting and the demoscopic jury. The results will be combined with those of the previous nights.
- Fourth night: the same systems used on the first three nights will be put in place.
- Fifth night: the entrants will be judged by televoting alone, to be added up to the results obtained that far; ultimately, a final voting round (again a sum of televoting and the two juries) will be held among the top 3, which will determine the winner.
Selections:
Sanremo Giovani 2021: Unlike previous editions, the Newcomers’ section was not included in the Festival, but a similar selection was held to decree the three places reserved in the Big Artist section. The artists competing in the new format were selected through two separate contests: Standard section and Area Sanremo.
Standard selection: On 20 October 2021, the RAI commission for Sanremo Music Festival 2022 announced a list of 711 acts, but only 30 artists coming from all Italian regions – excluding Basilicata and Valle d’Aosta – and from abroad were selected in the first phase.
On 22 November 2021, the RAI commission announced the eight finalists.

|
Area Sanremo: After the auditions, a RAI commission – composed by Amadeus, Gianmarco Mazzi, Claudio Fasulo, Massimo Martelli and Leonardo de Amicis – identified 4 finalists for the competition among the 330 acts:

Final: On 15 December 2021, the twelve finalists performed their songs at Sanremo Casino in Sanremo, with the show Sanremo Giovani 2021 broadcast on Rai 1 and presented by Amadeus. The three winners of the night, i.e. Yuman, Tananai and Matteo Romano, participated in Sanremo 2022 with a new entry.

At Eurovision: The Eurovision Song Contest 2022 took place at the PalaOlimpico in Turin, Italy and consisted of two semi-finals on 10 and 12 May and the final on 14 May 2022. According to Eurovision rules, all nations with the exceptions of the host country and the “Big Five” (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) are required to qualify from one of two semi-finals in order to compete for the final; the top ten countries from each semi-final progress to the final. As both the host country and a member of the “Big Five”, Italy automatically qualified to compete in the final. In addition to its participation in the final, Italy was also required to broadcast and vote in one of the two semi-finals. This was decided via a draw held during the semi-final allocation draw on 25 January 2022, when it was announced that Italy would be voting in the first semi-final.
Italy performed in position 9, following the entry from Armenia and before the entry from Spain. At the close of the voting, Italy finished in sixth place overall with 268 points.

Spain is scheduled to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy. The Spanish broadcaster Televisión Española (TVE) will organise the song contest Benidorm Fest in order to select the Spanish entry for the 2022 contest. After two semi-finals where twelve artists and songs will compete, a jury, a demoscopic panel and a public vote will select the winner.
Benidorm Fest is a song festival organised in Spain by the public communication company Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE) in collaboration with the Generalitat Valenciana to determine the country’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest since 2022. It is held in Benidorm, Valencian Community, at the Palau Municipal d’Esports l’Illa de Benidorm.
The contest consists of two semi-finals and a final, with the winner being chosen by the public and by teams of judges, both having equal influence on the final result.
History: The Benidorm International Song Festival (Festival Internacional de la Canción de Benidorm), until 2004 simply Benidorm Song Festival (Festival de la Canción de Benidorm), was an annual song contest held in the city of Benidorm, Spain. The contest, based on the Italian Sanremo Music Festival, was created to promote Benidorm and Spanish music.
It originally ran from 1959 to 2006 (except in 1979, 1984 and from 1986 to 1992, when it was not held) and used to take place in the summer. After 2006, it did not take place again through 2021, when a revamped edition, under the name Benidorm Fest, was announced by Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE) and the Generalitat Valenciana to be scheduled for January 2022, serving as the platform to select the Spanish entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.
The festival has undergone considerable modifications over the years, for example in the prizes. In 2004, it went from national to international. The contest was usually broadcast on television by REM (1959), TVE (1960–1985, 1997–2005), Telecinco (1993–96) or Canal Nou (1997–2006).
Background:
Prior to the 2022 contest, Spain had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest sixty times since its first entry in 1961.[1] The nation has won the contest on two occasions: in 1968 with the song “La, la, la” performed by Massiel and in 1969 with the song “Vivo cantando” performed by Salomé, the latter having won in a four-way tie with France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Spain has also finished second four times, with Karina in 1971, Mocedades in 1973, Betty Missiego in 1979 and Anabel Conde in 1995. In 2021, Spain placed twenty-fourth with the song “Voy a quedarme” performed by Blas Cantó.
The Spanish national broadcaster, Televisión Española (TVE), broadcasts the event within Spain and organises the selection process for the nation’s entry. TVE confirmed their intentions to participate at the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest on 3 June 2021.[2] In 2021, TVE selected the artist that would compete at the Eurovision Song Contest via an internal selection, while the song was selected via a national final. For their 2022 entry, the broadcaster announced on 22 July 2021 that it would organise a national final based on the national song contest Festival Español de la Canción de Benidorm in collaboration with the Generalitat Valenciana, which will feature a competition among several artists and songs.[3]
Return of a festival to Benidorm: After 15 years since the end of the Benidorm Festival, on 22 July 2021, RTVE broadcast a conference from Benidorm, in which the president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, the mayor of the city, Antonio Pérez Crespo, and the president of the radio station, José Manuel Pérez Tornero, announced the return of a festival held in the Valencian city with the aim of becoming the new pre-selection of Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest. In this broadcast, the public television assured changes and renewed mechanics, as well as a “double contest” in which both professional and amateur singers would take part, whose prize would be the possibility of representing Spain Eurovision, starting in the edition of 2022.
On 29 September of the same year, the rules and mechanics were published, and it was announced that the contest would be called Benidorm Fest and air at the end of January 2022. It was later announced that a contract had been signed to hold the event for four editions. The Generalitat Valenciana will invest around €968,000 in the event.
Benidorm Fest 2022:
Benidorm Fest 2022 will be the song festival organised by TVE that will take place at the Palau Municipal d’Esports l’Illa de Benidorm in Benidorm, Valencian Community. Fourteen artists and songs will compete over three shows: two semi-finals on 26 and 27 January 2022 and the final on 29 January 2022.[4] Each semi-final will feature seven songs and four will qualify for the final. The results of all shows will be determined through a combination of public voting, a demoscopic poll and an expert jury.[5] The fourteen competing acts were announced on 10 December 2021, while the competing songs were premiered on 21 December 2021. Among the competing artists was former Eurovision Song Contest entrant Azúcar Moreno which represented Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest 1990.[6][7]

Final[edit]
The final will take place in January 2022. The eight entries that qualified from the two preceding semi-finals will compete and the winner will be selected through the combination of the votes of an expert jury (50%), a demoscopic poll (25%) and a public vote (25%).
Format: The show is made up of two semi-finals and a final, in which twelve candidates – soloists, duos, trios or groups – perform their songs live.
The public (consisting of the televote plus a panel of judges made up of a sample of the Spanish population selected by statistical and demoscopic criteria) and a national and international jury vote for their preferred songs, and the votes are combined 50% public – 50% juries. At the end of the programme, the song with the most points is declared the winner and Spain’s representative at the Eurovision Song Contest.
Televised rounds and voting: The semi-finals are broadcast on two consecutive nights of the same week. In each of these, six songs compete, with three of them making it to the finals. The finalists are chosen according to the following system: 25% televote, 25% demoscopic panel (equating a 50% from the public), 30% national jury and 20% international jury.
The final takes place on the Saturday following the semi-finals. The three most voted songs in each semi-final compete, the winner of which will represent Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest. The voting system made up of the public and the jury is the same as in the previous galas.
Selection of participants: RTVE opened on 29 September a one-month period for artists, authors and composers to send their proposals to the public radio and television corporation, while the broadcaster itself reserves a direct invitation to renowned singers and authors from the current music scene. The contest is open to performers, groups and authors who are at least 16 years old before May, and who must be Spanish nationals or have permanent residence in Spain (in the case of duos or groups, at least 50% of the members must meet this condition). Singers can only submit one application, although composers have the possibility to submit one song as main authors, and two additional songs as co-authors.
Songs: Songs must be original and not have been published, performed or distributed, in whole or in part, before September of the previous year to the Eurovision Song Contest (in accordance with Eurovision rules). In addition, the song must be at least 2 and a half minutes long and at most 3 minutes long, and must include at least 65% of the lyrics in Spanish and/or co-official languages of Spain. Likewise, the authors can suggest the artist or group they consider ideal to perform their song, but the final decision is always RTVE’s.
Artists: After the inscriptions, a jury made up of professionals from RTVE and the music industry will evaluate the proposals received and selects the 12 candidates who will take part in the Benidorm Fest, as well as another 6 as substitutes, of which at least two must be from those who registered on the website. To choose the participants, gender parity, the combination of musical references with new talents and the variety of styles will be taken into account. Finally, the announcement of the names of the artists and songs by RTVE will take place between November and December.
