National selections for the Eurovision Song Contest
National selections refer to the processes in which the broadcasters of the countries participating in the annual Eurovision Song Contest select the artist and song that will represent them in the contest.
The two principal ways for broadcasters to select their entries are open selections (national finals) and closed selections (internal selections). Since the introduction of semi-finals in the Eurovision Song Contest 2004 – due to the extensive amount of participating countries – and the rule of the Big Five countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom), a wide range of countries often alternate between national finals and internal selections based on final placing at the contest.
• Expanding with “National Selections – Eurovision Song Contest”. The end of the Cold War in the early 1990s led to a sudden increase in numbers, with many former Eastern Bloc countries queuing up to compete for the first time. This process has continued to this day with more and more countries joining. For this reason, in 2004 the Semi-Final format was introduced by the EBU-UER which turned into two Semi-Finals for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008. Now all countries, except the ‘Big Five’ – France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom – together with the host country, must be in a Semi-Final top-10 to qualify for the Final.
Each country is de facto represented by its respective public broadcaster. It is at easch broadcaster’s sole discretion to determine who will represent their country at the Eurovision Song Contest.
There are three common ways to select a participant for the Eurovision Song Contest:
- Through a televised national selection: Through one or more television shows, the public can take part in the selection of the country’s representative. The most successfull televised national selection format is Melodifestivalen in Sweden, which features four live shows in different cities across the country, a second-chance show and a spectacular final;
- Through a full internal selection: Artist and song are being selected internally by a committee appointed by the broadcaster;
- Through a mixed format: Often, an artist is appointed by the broadcaster, while the public can help choose their song during a live television show;
The EBU-UER strongly encourages participating broadcasters to engage the public with the selection of a participant for the Eurovision Song Contest.
• “How it works – Eurovision Song Contest”. Each participating broadcaster that represents their country chooses their performer (maximum 6 people) and song (maximum 3 minutes, not released before) through a national televised selection, or through an internal selection. Each country is free to decide if they send their number-1 star or the best new talent they could find. They have to do so before mid-March, the official deadline to send in entries.
The winner of the Eurovision Song Contest will be chosen through 2 Semi-Finals and a Grand Final.
Traditionally, 6 countries are automatically pre-qualified for the Grand Final. The so-called ‘Big 5’ — France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom — and the host country.
The remaining countries will take part in one of the two Semi-Finals. From each Semi-Final, the best 10 will proceed to the Grand Final. This brings the total number of Grand Final participants to 26.
Each act must sing live, while no live instruments are allowed.
After all songs have been performed, each country will give two sets of 1 to 8, 10 and 12 points; one set given by a jury of five music industry professionals, and one set given by viewers at home. Viewers can vote by telephone, SMS and through the official app.
Out of fairness, you cannot vote for your own country.
Only those countries who take part in the respective Semi-Final vote, along with 3 of the 6 pre-qualified countries. Which countries take part and vote in which Semi-Final is determined by the so-called Semi-Final Allocation Draw in late January.
In the Grand Final, juries and viewers from all participating countries can vote again, after the 26 finalists have performed.
Once the voting window has closed, the presenters will call upon spokespersons in all participating countries and ask them to reveal their jury points live on air.
Next, viewers’ points from all participating countries will be added up, and revealed from the lowest to the highest, culminating into a climax that will eventually reveal the winner of the 64th Eurovision Song Contest.
The winner will perform once again, and take home the iconic glass microphone trophy. The winning country will traditionally be given the honour of hosting the next Eurovision Song Contest.
—
Each country must submit one song to represent them in any given year they participate. The only exception to this was when each country submitted two songs in the inaugural Contest. There is a rule which forbids any song being entered which has been previously commercially released or broadcast in public before a certain date relative to the Contest in question.
Countries may select their songs by any means, whether by an internal decision of the participating broadcaster or a public contest that allows the country’s public to televote between several songs. The EBU-UER encourages broadcasters to use the latter, as this generates more publicity for the contest. These public selections are known as national finals.
Some countries’ national finals are as big as—if not bigger than—the international Eurovision Song Contest itself, involving many songs being submitted to national semi-finals. The Swedish national final, Melodifestivalen (literally, “The Song Festival”) includes 32 songs being performed over four semi-finals, played to huge audiences in arenas around the country, before the final show in Stockholm. This has become the most watched programme of the year in Sweden. In Spain, the reality show Operación Triunfo started in 2002; the winners of the first three seasons proceeded to represent the country at Eurovision.
Regardless of the method used to select the entry, the song’s details must be finalised and submitted to the EBU-UER before a deadline some weeks before the international Contest.
Since 1971, each participating country has been required to provide a preview video of their entry, ostensibly to be broadcast in all the nations taking part. Broadcast of the previews was compulsory until the mid 1990s, but is no longer so, providing each country provides access to the videos online.
This post concentrates solely on the National Finals held each year in most countries to select their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. You can find details of all National Finals from 1956-present on this blog.
National finals. National finals are the process in which the public of a country can choose the artist with their song, often combining public televoting with the vote of an expert jury.
Organised by the broadcaster, these national finals (consisting of one or more shows) can be televised or non-televised, however most of the time they are televised as prime-time television shows. Oftentimes the artist is selected internally and the public of the country chooses a song for them with the national final. Alternatively, the broadcaster can select a song and make the public choose the artist that will perform the song through a national final.
Possibly the most known national final is Melodifestivalen in Sweden, which features four live shows (semi-finals) in different cities across the country, a Second Chance show and a final in Stockholm. In 2012, over an estimated four million people in Sweden watched the final, almost half of the Swedish population.
Another example of a national final format is Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu (UMK) in Finland; during 2018 and 2019, each participant wanting to represent Finland sent three songs to the Finnish public broadcaster Yle, which would select the entrants, and the public of the country would then choose one song among the three that he/she had presented to the broadcaster previously, at a national final.
Internal selections. Internal selections are the process in which the broadcaster of a country selects internally both the artist and the song, without holding a public vote.
Even though the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) “strongly” encourages countries to hold their own national finals, several countries such as Russia, Bulgaria and Austria are among those that have opted for internal selections for most of their entries in the contest. Choosing this method is also common for countries that have failed to qualify to the Grand Final on several occasions.
Participants. As of 2019 contest, 52 countries have participated among the potential list of 56 members of the EBU-UER, and a record 43 countries participated in 2008, 2011 and 2018.
